The location of the place is interesting: in the open-air section on the 5th floor of a car park. I would like to know what architectural/design considerations were behind this. One would not have guessed that there is a restaurant here! The decoration is traditional Chinese. The food is also largely traditional Hokkien. The service was lukewarm, but not rude. They just seem to be busy and do not really want to be bothered. The food quality/taste is somewhat average, with nothing seem to stand out. The fish maw soup is worth a mention. There is a deep-fried roll(but not spring, but I don’t remember the name) that was very good, similar to 雞捲 in Taiwan.

It’s my first time to this place for a birthday dinner. I was amazed by the Chinese décor that greeted me in the midst of the carpark. Ambience: Nice and traditional Chinese feel. I’m awed by the overall façade of the place, hence it’s a 5 star! Food: Overall food is meeting expectations just that it is slightly on the saltish side. Yusheng: Salmon is fresh and ingredients are given in good proportion Shark Fin soup: Good! Not bad. Crispy chicken: it comes with the prawn crackers and skin is crispy! It’s a lovely dish to have. Steam fish(not sure what’s the name): not so good as the texture of the fish is powdery seems to be not too fresh, probably due to the Chinese New Year period. Stir fried lobster: lovely! It’s really amazing with ginger slices and spring onions. Broccoli with scallop: broccoli is crunchy but overall the dish is too saltish Hokkien Mee: Done nicely as it’s not overcooked type. But still saltish Yam Paste with pumpkin & ginkgo: everyone on the table agree that it’s the best dish! It’s really good with the«cong you» smell! I will miss this dish! Longevity buns: it’s one of the bigger ones given compared to other places I’ve been to. nice lotus paste fragrant and not too sweet. Pricing: Around $ 700 plus for a table of 8 adults. Service: Thumbs up! Even with our frequent request for warm water and tea, they served us quickly even though the place is very full. The plates and bowl were constantly changed after almost after every 2 dishes. However when the birthday song was played on the PA system, it can be hardly heard. Probably due to the crowd and the location of our table.

Beng Thin Hoon Kee is a Chinese restaurant in the OCBC Centre building at Raffles Place, on the 5th floor. We just moved into this building and wanted to explore the food options nearby. A colleague recommended Beng Thin as I guess it has been an establishment for quite many years in Singapore. This is not the original location but I’m guessing they started out as a smaller joint somewhere in the heartland and with years of success opened a much larger and fancier spot here. They have a variety of set menus to choose from with prices ranging from $ 400-$ 1000-ish for a party of 8. We came right before CNY and had a guest visiting from the states so we did the whole Lo Hei thing and ordered a variety of items a la carte. Everything we tried was pretty tasty. This was the first time I ever tried fish ball soup — something about it having deep fried fish bladder(is that what fish ball soup is?) — I wasn’t totally grossed out so that was a plus. I guess I’m not very adventurous when it comes to Chinese food, especially because there is usually a heavy focus on seafood and I’m not a fan of seafood. When I tell folks I don’t like Chinese food, the whole room usually goes quiet and someone yells at me to leave Singapore immediately. Well Beng Thin Hoon Kee is A-OK in my books, that’s exactly how I would describe it. Not a huge fan but they are OK, hence the 3 stars. Would I come back? Probably as it’s right downstairs now!
