I only gave 1 star because there is no way to vote NO star. Visited the restaurant for dinner, it was empty. The staff just hung around, not even greeting us. When I asked for the waiter who was standing across the restaurant to come over, he shouted, «just fill in the order form». The menu items were very ordinary, but prices seemed high for a diner located in an Industrial Estate. After staring at the drab, depressing looking Grey walls for 5 minutes and being unimpressed by the rather pedestrian menu, we decided to leave. Was charged $ 1.50 for the 15 mins of parking…

Cafes are popping up all over Singapore faster than sexually transmitted lesions on the patrons of Orchard Towers. That’s some achievement. What I like most about Backstage is that it’s almost completely unpretentious. There’s a big space which is currently pretty empty. The seats are comfortable(none of this milk crate BS) and there’s free wifi. Coffee is locally roasted Palheta magic and the staff are very friendly. Extra care was taken when we ordered food as my better half was following a strict diet(for religious diet). We were even warned about the egg included in one of the salad sauces, unprompted. The food is really nothing amazing but it’s competently executed nonetheless. These days when I get a poached egg in Singapore that isn’t completely overcooked I celebrate a little bit. Expectations, people.
