This library is an important and beautiful part of Yarmouth. Although it isn’t as large as city libraries, it houses an incredible number of resources considering the meagre funds available. There is an archives section where you can search for family histories or just sort through old journals or periodicals; there’s a small room where kids can play quietly or read stories; there are two sections for computer use and even a sunshine-y reading area by the windows. Clearly, the library with the most reasources south of Halifax. The staff are kind and helpful souls. Most of them genuinely enjoy their job and will go out of their way to assist you. A lot of them are older women that have been working or volunteering at the library for a decade or two. They are genuinely invested in the library and what it brings to the community. It’s unfortunate that the libaray isn’t as valued by local or provincial officials as it is by the citizens. I’ve learned through conversations with the staff that the library does not even meet basic Health Canada Standards! Apparently there are issues with the roof and mould infestations. The visitors range from young kids, parents, older couples, teengers, retirees, and the list goes on. Although I spent many days here when I was in the«school skipping age», the staff never questioned why I was there and always helped me finish assignments(even when it was during school hours!) In hindsight, they were a much healthier influence than the rest of the school-skipping-crowd would have been.
