What an awesome piece of history! When I learned of the instrumental role that Sandwich First Baptist Church played in the lives of slaves that had escaped to Canada via the UGGR, I had to visit. This church is the oldest black church in Windsor, Ontario. The website says to it is best to schedule a tour. My last minute attempt to contact the church for this reason was unsuccessful. However, we were determined to at least drive by and take a few pictures. The location of the church isn’t too far from the Ambassador Bridge and fairly easy to find. Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised by the church being open, music pouring out the sanctuary from the solo pianist and a handful of other visitors scurrying about. Greeted by Ms. Lela, We entered the church and she began narrating the historical significance of the church. We were introduced to the pianist, learning that she has been a member for decades and her ancestorial heritage is here. We had the opportunity to see the hole in the church floor used by the refugees for escaping when bounty hunters would arrive looking for run always. The ladies were very nice. It was a brief visit but such an awesome time. I’m really glad that I had the opportunity to see the church and speak with these ladies. I do hope to return at least once for a Sunday service or other event. I definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area.
