Off the scale righteousness of Fish and Chips as fresh as fresh can be. I usually come here after going to the fishery in Wheatley and stocking my cooler to take back to Detroit. Liddle’s does Jumbo Yellow Perch and Walleye(Pickerel) lunch and dinner to perfection. I even liked the coleslaw, when at some places the coleslaw is just an after thought, it is homemade slaw here. I have had both the walleye and perch here numerous times and it is hard to pick a favorite. No greasy battered fish here… just a perfect coating and fresh fish. As good as shore lunch cooked by a Cree guide 800 miles to the north. When I think of Wheatley, now I think of Liddle’s simultaneously and plan my hunger… lol I am going to be bumming when they close for the winter !

5 stars +, but I took one off to try to avoid Unilocal’s tendnancy to filter local reviews. I found this place a couple of years ago and finally managed to return the other day. It is not that the food wasn’t good then, but this place is a little out of my way for a special trip just for food. This will change once I get serious about kayaking and birding. Liddle’s is one of those out of the way places you stumble across. It is loved by the locals, and those who know about it, such as bikers, cyclers and birders.(The popular Hillman Marsh is nearby.) It is run by the Liddle Fishery right at Wheatley Harbour, where fishing vessels that are part of the vibrant Lake Erie fishery bring their catch daily. With that, I assume their specialty, Lake Erie perch, is as fresh as it gets. The perch is has a tasty thin batter that is not your run of the mill fish and chips puffy, oil retaining batter. It is almost like they aren’t deep fried. For a lover of perch, their preparation of this local delicacy tops them all. The home cut fries are second to none, really! Add to that the non-vinegary sweeter kind of slaw and bun, and the meal is complete. The restaurant itself is a simple cinderblock building, part of the fishery structure. There are a couple of patio tables for inside dining, or you can sit outside when the weather is nice. Note the limited days they are open. Closed mid September through mid April. Cash or debit only. See photo for menu.
