This place gets a solid 3 from me. I usually grab lunch here when I’m working if I’m in a rush. They are generally quicker than other sushi places downtown. Typically, if I eat there, I would grab the Sashimi Lunch box for $ 9.95. It includes California rolls, Salmon and Tuna Sashimi, Gyoza, Seafood salad, Tempura, and Udon. It’s quite a bit of food for me, but I like variety. Also, try the Crazy Boy roll for $ 4.50. It’s a deep fried California roll. Sushiya isn’t a restaurant that blows me out of the water, but it’s not bad.

It may seem kind of strange to walk into a sushi place that is also a bagel store that sells chocolate bars and other vending machine fare. I was in a rush, so I ordered my lunch to go, and while waiting«the final countdown» by Europe came on the little boom-box that was playing in the restaurant/store. It was basically the final countdown to the end of my lunchbreak, which meant I was now officially late for work. How appropriate. Because if I am going to be late why wouldn’t I spend my last precious minutes at this sushi bagel convenient store? I had the veggie combo, which included a tofu roll, and a veggie roll. The rolls were pretty bleh, and I found I couldn’t even finish them, so I ended up throwing them out. Sushiya is the place that has a roll with BACON in it though! Perhaps the bagels and sushi rolls share toppings? Smoked salmon, bacon, lettuce tomato, who knows?! Or maybe you can get a sushi-bagel-roll??? They also have a roll called the«diet roll» ummm… do you have to be on a diet to eat the diet roll, and if so are you allowed to purge after eating it? What the heck goes in a DIET roll? A diet? Does it come with a list of things you are not allowed to eat? The whole experience in Sushiya weirded me out, since I wasn’t sure what the heck this place was supposed to be? Maybe if it focused on either bagels or sushi, or 7 – 11 it would succeed at one of them? Until then, it’s still farewell, and maybe we’ll come back to earth, who can tell? It’s the final meltdown.

This is my go-to place for lunch sushi during the week since it’s only a block away from my office and a cheaper/quicker option than Urban Sushi. At first I was hesitant to even try since it’s both a Great Canadian Bagel and a sushi joint, but they’ve got the 2 counters well separated and it’s pretty obvious how it works once you’ve gone inside. I now officially refer to it as Sushi Bagel. I’ve never been dissatisfied with my order. Their daily special is always a California roll with something else(and more often than not I’ll just get whatever the special is since it’s just easy). Once or twice I’ve had a piece of nigiri that didn’t seem completely fresh but for the most part it’s pretty good. Everyone who works the sushi counter is generally pretty friendly and the prices are very reasonable, especially for a quick lunch place. And I appreciate that they make everything to order rather than all ahead of time. This can make it a bit slow to wait for your food if you go during the lunch rush, but I take my lunch at 11:30 and rarely have to wait in any sort of line. Plus I really enjoy taking advantage of their counter seating along the window of the lower level, where I can read a book and people watch to my heart’s content.
