Very small location, so seating is definitely limited. There is a lot of variety on their menu, which can be a good thing for someone who likes getting different items, and the quality while not amazing, is pretty darn good for the area. And I’m pretty sure that the lunch time sushi chef and the waitress are actually Japanese for those out there who look for that kind of «stuff», LOL…

Love this place! Easily my favourite sushi spot in Vancouver. I discovered this place 2 years ago; now I go back all the time, since moving here. I always order the yam tempura rolls and beef teriyaki rolls. They are amazingly priced and the size of the rolls is huge! I’m always satisfied whenever going in hungry. The staff are so friendly and I always feel welcome here. I would recommend this establishment to anyone looking for the best sushi around. Love it and I will continue to come back and bring friends!

Delicious. We had the paradise roll and lion king roll. Lion king was spicy but good and paradise was awesome. Will come back.

I usually love going here. But this time it was pretty bad. I ordered the smoked salmon don and i asked for no sesame, when it came there was sesame then i had a hair in it. I asked to send it back and she came back saying ill give you a discount and gives me the same plate back so im guessing she was telling me to ignore the fact there was a hair in my food… So she came back with a new plate of rice with more sesame in it which again i told her not to. She gave me a miso soup without tofu and seaweed as a sorry i guess that was ok. My friend ordered a dinner box and a van special roll. The dinner box came quick but the van special roll didnt come at all and we asked about it after we finished all the food which was about 45 mins later. Then she seemed to add it to the menu then. Also 2 of our dinner boxes were supposed to come with miso soup but never came and we had to ask for it when we remembered after finishing the food. They gave us a dish of gyozas to apologize but there was no point because we were already full. Overall i was pretty disappointed, i’ll prob come back since my friends like going here.

When I first came here, the service was good. Now it’s gotten so poor my entire company does not come here anymore. They always have an unsociable waitress now, poor service, and the wait is gruesome. I came here for lunch and entered a half empty restaurant. The miso soup only took a good half hour before it finally arrives at the table, and the food took a long 40 minute wait. If you are coming here on your lunch break and have a limited time to eat, do not come here. The tea was not tea, it was so watered down, you were only drinking hot water, I am surprised the tea was even served, especially in a clear glass that you can literally see it was watered down. The food is decent but has gotten quite too salty over the years, not worth the wait. I am surprised the owner even questioned why my company never shows up anymore. Also, they don’t own spoons.

Lunch here was very nice, we were very happy with the sushi we ordered, we had friendly service, it’s a clean restaurant, the rolls we had were unique and the fish tasted very fresh. Will return

Came here once to try lunch and it was alright. A few special rolls but there was nothing that stood out but prices were overall reasonable.

For my lunch I went to Sushi Star on Nelson Street near my office. It’s a small take-out place where you can grab a quick bite. The place is owned by Koreans(expect to have more creative rolls than authentic sushi) and offers a wide range of lunch boxes & sushi rolls that can easily fill up your stomach at lower cost. A waitress brought me a cup of warm tea while I was waiting for take-out. Very thoughtful :) I like Atlantic salmon better than sockeye salmon in general because Atlantic sashimi tastes so much more filling and tender/soft to me. Although Sushi Star doesn’t have Atlantic Salmon on their menu, it was one of my lucky days because they had it in stock on the day. Atlantic Salmon Sashimi($ 9.90 for 9 pieces) wasn’t as big as what I used to get from other similar restaurants, but it was still cheap. In terms of taste, I wasn’t impressed about its quality. It was somewhat fishy and the knife skill wasn’t great. Star Dynamite Roll($ 7.95) is a Dynamite Roll topped with avocado, unagi sauce & mayo and tempura bits. Not too bad in terms of taste, but the sushi rice was a bit hard. Overall, nothing was outstanding but the location was great for me so that I might visit sometime. PROS + Rolls are cheap + A wide range of lunch boxes and special rolls CONS — Sashimi wasn’t worth the money RATING Food 2.0÷5.0 for Sashimi &3.0÷5.0 for the roll Ambience 2.0÷5.0 Service 4.0÷5.0 Price $, $$ Address 750 Nelson Street, Vancouver Phone number 6049740079 Hours of operation Monday to Friday: 1130am — 930pm Saturday: Noon-930pm Sunday: Closed

Was looking for quick sushi and tried this place out. Prices aren’t on the cheap side but the portions were big. I had the Dynamite roll bento box which came with miso soup, salad, gyoza, tempura, chicken(or beef) teriyaki and a dynamite roll. This was just over $ 11 before taxes. The service was fine. Like many sushi places nowadays, the chef isn’t Japanese. But, food quality and taste was decent.

You people who gives 5 star to this place is lying. Tell you what. This place is operated by Koreans. As another Korean, my expectation for this place was almost nothing before I walked in there, yet i was still disappointed. They put sliced radish on rice with tiny piece of Salmon and called it salmon don charge over $ 11. horrible taste. My recommendation for this place is «Stop put inedible stuff on don and sushi . Ended up paying 45 for stupid slightly tweaked California roll and 2 salmon dons. And one tuna maki Horrible taste ripped off price

Oh boy… Where do I start? I walk in and it’s pretty empty. Me and 3 other tables sitting. I order and after a few minutes that I ordered I was told it would take 20 minutes. I was like ok. Sure. All the other tables are already eating. So it would probably take less and they want to give me the reversed psychology of «we said 20 you got it in 10−15». Well. 30 minutes later I started getting what I ordered.(5 rolls in total and tuna tataki. Yeah I wasn’t alone ;)) The sushi wasn’t amazing. One of their rolls was pretty much not eatable the«fantastic roll»… I tell you. Nothing fantastic about it., The tuna tataki was ice cold in the center. I literately hit ice in the center of my tuna. Horrible. Come to think of it now. Maybe that’s why they told me 20 minutes. They wanted the frozen tuna to defrost before they serve it. Instead of telling me that they are out, they served me with frozen food. One thing is certain, I will not come back!

I always gets the spicy chirashi don — and it’s always fabulous. If you like fresh sashimi this is a great spot. I haven’t ordered any of the speciality rolls on the menu but they all look delicious and interesting.

This was some of the best sushi I’d had in a long time! I was really impressed by the uniqueness of the rolls. They use interesting ingredients like yam, mango, and sriracha. They also had a «white dragon roll» as opposed to the usual dragon roll I see everywhere else.(Is this a Vancouver thing?!) Pros: — Free hot tea — Great selection of rolls(also check out the daily specials above the sushi bar) — Friendly staff — Affordable Cons: — Slightly slow service given that we were one of the only customers

I’ve been on the hunt for a new go-to sushi place since my old fave had a change in ownership. The place is tiny and was extremely cold when we visited! A door towards the alley seemed open. One hostess/waitress, pictures of special rolls on the walls and average $ 7 – 15 prices. Bf likes specialty rolls so we ordered two, along with a spicy salmon and tuna salad. Salad was really sashimi over a few spring mix leaves. Rolls were a hit or miss, mostly due to poor distribution of sauces. Won’t be my next go-to, but basics(bento, tempura, California rolls) looked fine on neighboring table.

Not a bad place for your quick lunch for sushi. One thing I realize about this place is that they are not consistent in making their sushi. Note: it is Korean owned, but their sushi is delicious and fresh. They have a good list of delicious sushi, and especially their oven baked sushi roll! YUMMY! Those are my favourite here. I have checked out all the prices with Chirashi don within the area and they are the cheapest so it’s mainly the only thing I order here. Their sashimi is freshly cut and they are cut perfectly to the way I want it. The various different type of sashimi is perfect to the ratio on the bed of rice. Their specials rolls are unique and copies some places that I have been to, but imitation is another form of flattery right? ;) It is a great place for a quick lunch, but I haven’t been here for dinner yet so I wouldn’t know then: P

Of the sushi roll places in this area, I can’t think of anything better, other than that izakaya place across from the old Capitol 6 on Granville. Highly recommend their star star roll, a suped-up cali roll with spicy tuna on top, & pretty good value at under $ 9! And the tuna & salmon sashimi is also pretty fresh, better than Sushi California as a comparison. It’s a nice, small ‘joint’, with only one side of tables, about 6 – 7 plus seating at the sushi bar, which is my fav seat when i’m going solo. But it’s definitely date-worthy, so the window seat’s the best as you can see who’s coming in all the time, the cashier is right there as you need to pay up front after you’re done eating ;) Parking as usual dt, there’s only 5 spots of street parking right in front. Since it’s right by the alley, I take my chances when I do pickup ;) IMHO, this is one of the best-kept secrets!

I was recently at the restaurant ordering my usual take out, when I noticed they had specials that weren’t on their menu! Say what! So I made note, and the next time around I ordered the following: — lava roll(baked chopped scallops, onion, mushroom, prawn on top) for 9.50 — poseidon roll(soft shell crab, seaweed salad, chopped scallop, crab meat, cucumber) for 11.95 — golden bridge roll(my usual ordering) Baked rolls take some time so you have to be patient, but they’re well worth the wait. The poseidon roll was a bit expensive for what it was offering — really, they were just cali rolls with chopped scallops on top, and a soft-shell crab and seaweed salad on its own, not embedded in the roll. The Lava roll is another baked one, and is deliciously savoury. I actually really liked this one as the flavour is different from regular sushi since most of the ingredients are cooked. Overall, the place is still a win with all their selections. There’s the budget options of 18 cali rolls for $ 6, or the fancier rolls if you feel like being adventurous. The staff is always friendly and on warm days they like to set out some table & chairs outside. … The longer it takes me to finish this review, the more I want to order sushi star for dinner tonight. I should stop here…

Well — This place is close to the hotel and I’ve walked by it a number of times and unfortunately will not be a repeat customer. I was the only customer(always a bad sign & I should have known better), I placed my order and they were very nice, and were quick at preparing the food. I took the take out back to the hotel and did not enjoy it. I had vegetable tempura which was very greasy and not very flavourful at all. I also had a salmon roll — didn’t smell very good and I had one bit and no more… sooooo not my kinda place !

Good lunch stop or take away but no place to dine with a date or when the sun goes down. Warm but thin atmosphere. Perfect for lunch in or take away. Room for only 26 in and 2 out. Very friendly server. Noon in Friday found one other person dining. By 12:15 we were all full up. Good for you Sushi Star. You have your following. Music was up beat but loud. It did drown out the street noise. Golden Bridge Roll– surprisingly good and different. I would definitely suggest this one kids. Assorted sashimi– mmmm. Not so much. Thin and on the warm side of cold. Stick with the rolls here, unfortunately and come in for lunch. You will not be alone. If I’m hungry and walking past, I will stop in not make a B line to eat here again.

This place is the best place for regular sushi in the neighborhood. I’ve ordered from there quite a bit as I work nearby. The décor is pretty nice and clean, although definitely not super fancy. The servers are really nice, and the best part, the prices are pretty cheap, especially for downtown. The sushi rolls are really great! They also have fabulous combos. They have a great selection of things and if you want take out, they are pretty fast with that. The sashimi is of pretty regular quality for downtown, I think the rolls and Teriyaki are where they really shine. The portions are big but not too big so it’s really good value. I’ve been to all of the sushi restaurants within a 4 block radius of this one, and this one is my absolute favorite.
