The Davie village is nice in the night time but in the day time its like any other street. This is the same for Toronto and Montreals «gay» village. Thats all that I saw as well, was gay men. There is nothing wrong with this, but its suppose to be a village for everyone under the LGBT umbrella, and the LBT were lacking. But then again, this is the same for Toronto and Montréal (especially Montréal, omg LBT people are practically invisible).
That being said, visit in the night time or evening :)

OMG I love Davie Village. Awesome eateries, awesome shops and just a friendly vibe all around. Sometimes a girl just wants to spend time with the boys without an agenda and just laugh. Davie street has so much to offer in terms of a close community that I rarely see outside the city. Next to Commercial Drive, this is as close to a warn welcoming community in the city. Now that the sidewalks are painted with a rainbow… I feel magical walking on a rainbow. To my dad who said that I will never walk on rainbows… I did.
