Lovely small sushi stop with good quality ingredients and friendly owners. With a few places on main and Broadway area, you might miss this one. Definitely worth a try. I’ll be back!

I had noticed the Carp sign months ago and it never put two and two together. I had walked in there today expecting to see the old Japanese woman that made sushi in that location for decades… but she’s gone and now we have Carp. Carp is very small but they have managed to offer seating. It’s good for a small groups, I’d say no more than six people per large table. I ordered the California Roll to go. This was made fresh and not pre-made and stored in the cooler. Don’t know if this is the normal practice as I didn’t see sushi of any kind in the cooler. Carp offers a reward card — which you will see in my picture. The California Roll was tasty, had black sesame seeds on it, which I love. It’s a good place if you need a quick snack. Will probably return in the future.

I went to Carp for the first time, and found a small friendly restaurant which is a bit hidden from view. It is right around the corner from Broadway, but not easily visible when driving on Broadway. It is across the street to the east of Kingsgate Mall. – What I ordered today – Rice bowl, spicy salmon and tuna — 1 x $ 9.00 Roll, California(8 piece) — 1 x $ 3.50 Nigiri sushi, salmon — 2 x $ 3.00 Total — $ 18.50 plus tax – The food – The rice bowl had the spicy salmon and tuna with some sliced cucumber and avocado to one side, and some of what I think was oshinko(yellow pickle) mixed in. It had some seeds and bits of crunchy stuff sprinkled on top. I couldn’t identify the crunchy bits, but I liked them. It also had some ginger in. Overall, this rice bowl wasn’t my favourite combination of flavours, but was good nonetheless. They have a spicy tuna rice bowl($ 8.00) and a spicy salmon rice bowl($ 10.00) on the menu, but the combined one I had is not listed. They seemed quite happy to make it though, and charge the averaged price($ 9.00). The California roll was the type that has shredded(synthetic) crab meat. Some California rolls have sticks of(synthetic) crab meat, which I prefer. Unless a California roll is bad, I think they are generally all pretty similar. Therefore, this was an average, good California roll. The salmon nigiri sushi was good, but I think $ 3.00 each seems a bit steep. – The service – Upon entering, I ordered my food at the counter, and when it was ready, they brought it to the table. The staff were very friendly and cheerful. – The ambience – Carp is a very small restaurant, having one 2 to 4 person table and one 6 to 8 person table. They had Caribbean music playing, which is unusual for a Japanese restaurant, but I quite liked it. They had nice decorations, including some large kite like fish, and an image done in an apparently traditional Japanese style depicting what looked like samurai playing baseball. Strange, but very cool! – Cleanliness – The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that the plastic washable chopsticks were left in boxes at the tables. I would’ve preferred these to be kept behind the counter and handed out as needed to ensure cleanliness. Overall, cleanliness appeared fine.

Great fresh food. Also serves poke which is an awesome variation from the same old raw fish you’ll find elsewhere in the city. Owner/chef is super friendly and has some great skills.

Very good sushi — fresh, tasty, medium size. I ordered the spicy tuna roll and was amazed by the delicate taste and the oomphy size of the filling. Love that there is no day-old deep fried«stuff» as in the other sushi joints in our ‘hood! Love the ginger which is not dyed flourescent pink! I think I love Carp! Just a lovely sushi-maker behind the counter, chatting with the customers. Rolls are served on mid-century melmac. Choose a bento box to take home for your supper — the cooler has a small assortment of to go, including ratatouille. So glad to have fresh sushi in the ‘hood! Please visit Carp so they stay with us!

Great service, good food, OK price. The service was great; the cashier greeted me at the door and was ready to take my order. There was only one other person in there so perhaps the attention was because the night was slow. I ordered the carp combo(california roll, ½ tuna+½ salmon maki, ½ spicy tuna roll, green salad, miso soup) and a salmon and avocado roll. The rice was great with the black and white sesame seeds speckled on top of the rolls, the salmon was amazing, the green salad was simple and delicious, the other rolls were OK but the spicy tuna wasn’t spicy at all and the miso soup was average. Overall, the combo was good. The salmon and avocado roll was great as well. The rolls in general are a good size, not too big, and not with too little filling. My meal came to $ 15 including tax. The value isn’t the best here but the food is good. If I were to order several individual pieces than I can see my bill quickly racking up. I usually go to Sushiyama across the street but the quality of their food has gone downhill ever since they got new staff. Overall, I would come back again and try other items on their menu.

Called in for some take out, and was very pleased with the sushi. Rolls are good size, not crazy huge, but just right. And good quality fish. $ 9 combo came with miso soup and salad. Great deal, and very friendly service too. 2 thumbs up!

Absolutely great. Perfect rice, fresh fish, great technique. Better than all other sushi in the area by quite a bit.

The best sushi in the neighbourhood. Good prices, friendly service, great quality food. It’s not the fastest, but they don’t have anything premade so I’ll gladly wait. And some of the to-go items in the cooler are really good(candied salmon bites, tofu dessert, etc). It’s quickly become my go-to place in the Kingsgate area.

I’m obsessed with this place! Everything is so fresh and delicious and the owners(I think?) are super friendly. I’ve been getting the spicy salmon/tuna bowls. They are very reasonably priced AND he only uses wild salmon. They also include avocado and cucumber which not every place does. The spicy sauce on top is incredible and I can’t get enough of it. I’ve also tried a few of the rolls and miso soup which were all equally as good! I’m excited to try everything on the menu! All in all this place is amazing and I couldn’t be more excited to have it in the neighbourhood. I’ve completely stopped going to other sushi places around the hood because they just can’t compete!!!

We live just up the street from this little place, and decided to come here instead on our way to sushiyama. We are so glad we stopped in! The sushi was fresh and delicious, and well made. The guy behind the counter was a really nice Japanese guy, the owner I’m pretty sure. He made our sushi fresh in front of us. I’d highly recommend stopping in here for a bite. It’s quick and affordable, and a great local place to support.

Brand new Japanese takeout storefront(there’s one table inside for seating) which just opened up a week ago. The rolls are made to order, but there is a fridge with yummy things like tofu panna cotta and yellow/green bean tempura, as well as bento(so far I only saw one type). The guy who runs the place is Japanese(bonus! We could always use more Japanese run Japanese restaurants). I ordered a salmon and avocado roll and was very pleasantly surprised! First off the prices are inclusive of GST, and second he uses wild sockeye salmon. As you can see from the picture the avocado was extremely fresh and perfectly ripe, and the sushi rice was reasonably well made, just a little on the wet side. The rolls are reasonably sized and very reasonably priced(maki start at $ 2). I would definitely try some other things on the menu.
