Situated on the northwest corner of Spadina and Richmond stands this bronze and concrete installation by Montréal artist Stephen Cruise. Equal parts Fisher Price rock-a-stack and giant bronze thimble, I believe the work is commentary on the garment industry. Or maybe it’s just something fun to smash into when you’re not looking. I don’t hate it, but the garish colours are a little jarring. As a tax-paying citizen I should not have to walk by(or into) pastel-coloured artwork without ample warning. I’d have preferred the entire thing without the Froot Loop pedestal, but hey, what the Hell do I know? Anyway, if you’re in the area, take a gander. It’s hard not to notice it. Obligatory Title Pun: This STACK doesn’t quite MEASUREUP. Menu Readability: n/a Need to mention: The sculpture was cast in 1997. What this place teaches me about myself: I remember the toys of my childhood fondly.

I remember learning about Toronto’s old textile industry when I was taking Fashion in college. A glorious field trip to the Spadina area lead to my discovery of THETHIMBLE! So why do I LOVE this thimble so much? My grand-mother was a seamstress so this statue reminds me of her every time I pass it. It’s also a nice part of the city filled with little restaurants, café’s and a great view of the CN tower. I am sure you’ve all seen this fantastical 10 foot statue by Starbucks on the outskirts clubland. It’s made of bronze and sits on a stack on colourful buttons. It was created in 1997, by sculptor/artist Stephen Cruise, as a tribute to Toronto’s fashion presence.
