I was on the hunt for some picnic food for an afternoon in High Park. Stopped into this Sobeys Express to get some pre-made sandwiches, salads and drinks. The store is very cluttered, didn’t feel /look clean and it’s hard to find anything. I have never been a fan of Sobeys and this visit did nothing to change my low opinion. The pre-made sandwiches were expensive but poor quality. The whole wheat buns were doughy and dull, the cold cuts were cheap quality & salty and the lettuce /tomatoes were wilted. What a disappointment — the exact opposite of a fresh sandwich! The salads were slightly better. Prices were on the higher end and not appropriate given the cheap quality of product. Never again… BK

I really hoped for better. You can find cheaper produce steps away in either direction. They lack selection for produce and non-produce. Try nearby health-food stores for cereals and spices, or Loblaws south of Bloor for way more selection. The only reason to go here is if you need Mascarpone and Loblaws is too far away.

This is a Sobeys«Express», which seems to mean that they threw the concept together really fast and hope you won’t notice that it sucks. The location used to be an IGA, back when this small size was the norm for grocery stores. But those used to the selection at bigger Sobeys locations will be disappointed, although the prices are still inflated – especially considering the wealth of cheaper and more ethnically interesting groceries available all along this stretch of Roncesvalles. The hours are also not as good as they could be. I don’t understand why the huge Sobeys stores have to be open twenty-four hours out by the highway, but a neighbourhood branch isn’t, because a place like this could compete successfully with the variety stores for the drunken, after-hours munchies crowd.
