Very tasty, very fresh and VERYCHEAP. Silverstein’s supplies bread in bulks to many other retailers, so you cut out the middle man by going to the source and therefore get a cheaper deal for fresh, same-quality bread. The entrance is a bit shady. You walk in an unmarked red door and go up some steps, then come out onto the factory floor. I felt like I was in an «employee-only zone» and was a bit confused. But turns out you can just walk on through and someone will come help you. They have the cutest old wooden cash register, and the employees were all really courteous and friendly. Anyways I would definitely go back but I do wish they’d get a more inviting/obvious store front. It took me years to actually decide to go inside!

Cheap, fresh bread! Ever since I moved nearby, this is where I get my bread. It’s only $ 2.50 for six foot long sub buns and $ 2 for a loaf of whole wheat, which is a great deal. The bread is delicious and better than regular store-bought. I especially recommend the rye bread! Although the entrance looks sketchy(go in through the red door before 6), it’s really a great spot to buy from.

This is the place to go for cheap yet good quality bread! I love their egg bread which is soft and fresh at an affordable price of $ 2.60 a loaf that’s fresh out of their oven racks! Their rye bread is pretty good too but egg bread is still my fav!

Great place to buy good quality bread for cheap. Nothing fancy but I always get the french loaf(ask to get it sliced) which is soft and white on the inside and crusty on the outside for $ 2.25. I also never finish the loaf because it’s so big. You can also get bagels here. I once asked if I could get half a dozen instead of the pre-packed 12 and they kindly obliged. As others have mentioned, it is kind of confusing to get in and know what to buy but the people working there are nice. A hidden gem.

Ever since a friend introduced me to this bakery about two years ago it has become my go-to place for bread. Silverstein makes various kinds of loaves — rye, whole wheat, multi-grain, marble, egg — and then there are buns /rolls of various types. You can also customise large orders. I’ve tried all their products but my favourite is the rye bread, costing $ 3.10 for a loaf(I’ll post the weight later) which I think is quite affordable. The bread comes straight out of their oven racks and you can ask it to be sliced thin, medium or thick. For an optimal bread to topping/condiment ratio(for sandwiches), I always get medium slices. Their factory is located on McCaul street between College and Dundas on the east side and that’s where you buy bread from; fresh from the factory, no middlemen. There are no signs, so enter through the large orange door and turn left. The workers are friendly and if they see you linger around for a while near the cash register, someone will come and help you. So fresh and real is their bread that if you leave it on your counter for few days it will catch mould. This is quite the opposite of grocery store-bought breads which will last for a much longer time. So this is what I do — buy a loaf and freeze half of it. I don’t remember buying bread at a grocery store in the past two years(ok, maybe a couple of instances) and I am quite happy to keep it that way.

After being unsatisfied with typical grocery store offerings, Silverstein’s has become my household’s exclusive provider of bread. We visit about once a week, and by the time we get home, we’ve gouged large holes in the loaf where bread once used to be. You can ask for the bread to be sliced or not, unless it’s too fresh, then they won’t slice it for you. If you don’t know the name of the bread, go point at it, and next time, you can ask for it by name. Given the freshness, quantity and quality, the price is pretty decent. Though, I guess there are no fancy breads, like focaccia. Oh, how to get in? The orange door that says, «no entry after 6pm.» Walk up and down the half-stairs, and to your left where a big doorway(with no doors) separates the cooling racks from the workshop area. Stand there with confidence and the baker on cash duty will serve you before too long. Tip: Visit in the early afternoon for white-rye(1pm), and late afternoon(3pm) for whole grain.

I have to give this place 5 stars. The bread is tasty and prices are very reasonable. More than that, where else in the city can you walk right into a bread factory and buy a fresh baked loaf? It’s an experience unto itself and a definite must-do if you are in the area. This is one of those places you can really impress your friends/family from the burbs with just because you know it’s there.

This an interesting placed to buy bread near the downtown area. One can literally walk to the production floor and pick up from the various baked items. I am surprised how is it not a health code violation as the customers are for sure not dressed to be in a commercial baking operation(saw a coughing buyer on the floor) The prices though good are not amazing and breads are OK. I guess I didn’t pick the right bread as I found the rye bread I bought ordinary. Weird entrance though.

It has taken me 3 years to work up the courage to walk in and buy a loaf of bread! For the longest time I was confused about how to get in and how to buy the bread. After walking in through a mysterious orange door and going up and down some stairs I realized I’ve stumbled into Carb Heaven. There were so many racks of bread everywhere! After turning left, I saw other customers ordering their loaves and just lined up after them(good thing they were there or else I would have been lost!) The staff that helped me out was really nice and you get a huge amount of bread for cheap. I got the rye bread for around $ 3 and even after sharing it with many people, I still couldn’t finish the whole loaf. I’ll be coming here from now on to buy bread, I just wished there was some way of knowing what kind of bread they carried. Side note: they have a really cute old-school wooden cash register! I just HAD to take a pic!

If you’ve ever walked through Baldwin village or down McCaul and notice that the air around you is suddenly making you feel as if you’ve walked into a small specialty bakery with the aromas and heat of freshly baked bread, then look to the grungy little orange factory on McCaul! I don’t know where they actually sell their breads but they make a whole lot of them fresh daily and you can just walk in and buy them straight from the furnace! Although a little confusing, enter through the door on the south side and walk through the door that says«Authorized Personnel Only» — I swear, it took me three visits to finally realize I was an authorized personnel! Walk down the stairs and head to the open space to the left, you’ll see fresh bread being packaged! The staff here are some of the nicest I’ve come across and the breads(anything from baguettes, to Ciabbata, to regular whole grain sliced loafs) are extremely cheap(not to mention, fresh and delicious). Keep in mind though that this place is CASHONLY!
