Being McDonalds and selling pseudo food is bad enough, but the service and clientele make it that much worse. In many ways I am glad the locations closest to home are the worst — easier to avoid the temptation of grabbing a quick snack! If you love their breakfast sammiches like my hubby does, go to the Front Street location, a little further but better service and no sketchy clientele.

The Queen and Church McDonalds is unique but not in the way you want it to be. The clientele at this location are extremely weird. There’s a substance abuse centre one block east of the McD. They usually hire security guards during the night shift(can you think of the last McD do went to that had a security guard watching you at your Big Mac?). The only redeeming quality of this McDonalds is that it’s open 24 hrs. Tip for Unilocalers: go to the Eaton Centre location. Tip for McDonalds: start serving all day breakfast already.

This is a tough one to review, because I have huge love for McDonalds Canada in general. Their coffee and their breakfasts are easily the best chain fast food coffee and breakfasts around. I like Tim’s and Starbucks, but McDonalds breakfast produce trumps both of them hands down. Unfortunately, this location is a bit of a hellhole. My boyfriend and I were there at 10.30am on a Sunday, and even at that civilised time, we were the only customers there who were not clearly high on crack or meth. I say that with no exaggeration or irony. Some of the druggies were not even eating or drinking McDs, in fact one was drinking a Tims coffee while hiding away in the corner muttering to himself! Others were just loitering around inside the restaurant, not ordering anything. The staff were pretty unfriendly to us, but when I look at the customers they have to deal with, I can’t really blame them. It must be frightening working in this location. They should really take cue from McDonalds in Europe and hire a security guard. Thankfully there are other McDonalds nearer to both my home and my work where I can get my delicious coffee and breakfast sandwich fix.

I’ll start off with the good of this place. It’s just a block away from my place, so it’s very convenient and 24-hours which is a plus when you want something gross at 3am, lol. There is a manager here that I really like, unfourtunately I’ve never gotten his name. But I think he’s Indian? Don’t quote me on that. The staff that work in the morning for breakfast are fantastic. It seems though, that they put all their good full time workers on in the morning and shove all the poor part-time students on in the evening and late-night. I do not envy the junk that those guys have to deal with at this location. Now, on to the REAL reasons I’m writing this review. As previous posters have said, this place becomes a crack den at certain times of the late evening/night. You get harassed for money coming into the restaurant, harassed for money and food while inside, and harassed once again when leaving. You might even get asked two or three times by two or three different people while in line. The staff do nothing about this, not that I can blame them. Some of these undesirables are very intimidating. I’ve never sat down and eaten inside the restaurant for this reason alone. The place starts to smell up, and these people leave a massive mess at the condiment station and on the tables. It would do this location a good deal to hire a security guard for the late nights/overnights. Their coupon policy seems to change on a whim. They’ll take the coupons sent in the mail no problem, but can’t seem to decide whether they’ll take them when they’re printed out. Why they would offer them for print out on the website but not accept them in store is beyond me, but not a huge deal even though it’s irritating. I once went in to use one, the manager denied me but then took one from the customer right behind me because he put up a bigger stink than I did. I felt really bad for the young man at the cash — it was obvious he thought I would raise problems even though he was just doing as he was told. I’ve had a friend that was refused service because she had a sandwich from Subway in the store and went in to purchase something from McDonalds as well — we were NOT sitting down to eat, but they wanted to enforce some«no outside drinks» rule. I’ve worked on fast-food and NEVER heard of not allowing a customer in the door with other food unless they sat down to eat it and not purchase anything from the restaurant in which they were in. Just today my sister and her friend sat in to eat their meals, and my sister went up to the counter to ask for a small drink for the fountain pops. They gave her a small clear cup and said to just use that. I’m not sure who said what and to whom, but suddenly a white guy that none of us had EVER seen before came out claiming to be the manager, accused my sister of stealing and told her she needed to leave the restaurant immediately. He accused her of stealing in front of all the other customers and didn’t even bother to ask the cashier what had happened or listen to any explanation. So it’s perfectly okay for the homeless and crack-heads to dig cups out of the garbage or bring their own to fill up as many times as they like without ever buying anything and harass customers and perfectly fine to bully a young woman and accuse her of being a thief — even though the cashier gave her that cup to use at the machine, when her and her friend BOTH paid for their food and were not bothering anyone. Save your time and money, go across the street and grab a Shawarma. Those guys are great and your body will probably thank you for it later, lol.

Yes I know, McDonald’s is a horrible place to visit, let’s clog those arteries and let’s gain some weight. Regardless… Walking into this McDonald’s is like walking into the Philippines. Every single person working in this fast food joint seemed to be filipino. Yes, they will speak filipino to each other after taking your order, and will yell their jokes in their mother tongue to one another, sadly, they should take into consideration that some people can actually understand Tagalog. Hold your tongue folks. Long lines, yet fast service. Don’t bother sitting here to sit and eat, because sometimes you’ll need to pinch your nostrils shut. Why? Well, the homeless like to frequent this joint as well. Take note that this McDonald’s is located in a sketchier part of town — for example, the ScotiaBank on the corner is robbed frequently. Just get your food and go.

The McDonald’s located at the Queen & Church intersection is like a casting call for A&E’s intervention. This location seems to attract an oddball customer base, the kind of customer base that freebases in the back alley behind the restaurant. If you’re looking for a decent McDonald’s make the extra 5 minute walk down Queen St, inside the Eaton’s Centre.
