We have been drinking Henry of Pelham wines for years, and last year we decided to go to the winery for the first time. The tasting room is located in a beautiful restored old barn, and they have friendly knowledgeable staff to guide you through their large selection of wines. I am particularly fond of their Cuvee Catharine sparkling wine in any of it’s versions. They also produce some surprisingly excellent and long lived reds. I have enjoyed some of their reds up to 20 years after release, a rarity for Ontario wines. There is a wide selection of wines and price points so it won’t be difficult to find something you like here. Enjoy!

Having read the previous reviews I can only think that Henry of Pelham has listened. When I was there yesterday, I found the staff very engaging. At one point I had 3 staff helping me at once. The tasting room was clean, tidy and well laid out. I tried a few wines and the staff were only to eager to offer me something else that I might like. When I was paying for my tasting I accidentally saw a checklist the manager/owner left the staff to ensure high quality standards. «Check wine before pouring for guests», «Make sure bottles are dusted» etc… Finally, the other reason I like this place is that their prices are reasonable. You can pick up a bottle of wine for under $ 15. If you want to splurge, the Blanc de Blancs Carte Blanche is amazing(even at $ 44.95). On my way out, the staff gave me a recommendation for a new winery to check out. Back 10 Cellars… it was great too.

This was the most disappointing winery of the day. I was at Henry of Pelham a few years ago and it was much better. The wine boutique is very neat, in a rustic old barn. This weekend I noticed how dirty, dusty and full of spider webs it was. Looks like they are cutting back on cleaning expense. The wines were okay, I remember their wines being better a few years ago. I think this winery is past its prime and needs new owners who are motivated and ambitious. I’d pass on Henry Of Pelham. There are way better wineries on the route.

If one day I own a winery(yes, I love to dream) in NOTL, I would love to have one that is as nice as Henry of Pelham Winery. Love the rustic colonial looks of the building. Really down to earth and welcoming. 4 sample tasting for $ 5 that includes the Estate and Reserve wines that one cannot find it at LCBO. The Speck Family Reserve and Ice Wine are priced individually per tasting. I really enjoyed their wine as I found most of them are balanced and well rounded with the character I personally preferred. Ended up getting a 2011 Baco Noir($ 24.95) which I will leave it in my «cellar» for a few years and will match it with lamb or steak, spicy pasta with rich tomato sauce! $ 10 tour daily at 1:30 from May-October that includes free tasting! But if you have specific wines that you want to taste, I suggest just do the tasting for $ 5!

You can never help where you fall in love with someone or something. You could meet your future wife at the monster truck rally. You could find your favourite song while wheeling in for some elective surgery on your elbow. I fell in love with this winery on Air Canada flight. Drinking it out of a plastic cup, I was not expecting anything good to come from an airline bottle of merlot. I guess it’s true that good things can come in small packages. I visited Henry of Pelham in the winter months so that I really didn’t get a sense as to what their grapes had to offer. Still open in the winter, you are able to go and buy wine by the bottle or case if you like. Even under it all the snow you can see the acres of vines going off into the distance and snow topped picnic tables that would afford you a great place to lunch in the summer. The interior of the vineyard shop is stone wall and warm even in the winter. Perhaps the wood stove helps with that. By going into the shop you’re able to get many wines that are not readily available outside of restaurants that order them specifically. The LCBO does not order everything that Henry of Pelham has to offer, which is a good thing and a bad thing. Yes, it would be good to have the entire inventory of this winery at your fingertips on your next trip to the liquor store, but sometimes the adventure of getting to this midsized winery makes it even better.

Henry of Pelham is on my list of wineries to skip my next trip to Niagara. Not that there was anything particularly bad about the winery, just nothing good enough to draw me back(especially with all the other amazing vineyards in the area). The tasting room was small and dark, the staff was un-engaging, and the wines were all blah. I did buy a bottle of the Reserve Baco Noir simply because it was unique(when was the last time you saw a bottle of Baco in the local packie?) and the best Baco I had tasted so far, but that’s not saying a lot for the variety. But who knows — maybe you’ll have better luck on your trip.
