I’ve been going here for over 10 years and they, by far, have the best Saj(sausage) pies in the city. My wife also loves it as it is halal and no pork products are used in the sausage. It’s one of the reasons I miss living in the south end. Highly reccomend this place to anyone who has tried and who can argue with breakfast for $ 3.50???

This business is running on low budget. They DONOT turn exhaust on so save money I don’t trust to eat with them if they are cheating on power cost and bother their neighbors of food odor. They leave the door open to save on electricity. Flies and dust gets in to the food. A neighbor filed complaints to health Canada and to fire department about their practices.

So I went here recently with my husband and we got 2 meat pies($ 1.75 each) and 2 meat and cheese pies($ 2.75 each). The meat pies here are chock-full of meat. Much more meat than at any other meat pie place I’ve been to(Aladdin, Mid-East Food Centre, Farhat, and Kabab Prince). The dough is also a tiny bit thicker. The meat pie felt very substantial. They also give you a lot of cheese in the meat and cheese pie. The flavour of the meat was good. Very rich in spices. Although it lacks the smokey flavour present in Aladdin’s meat pies. However, overall it was delicious. The person serving us washed his hands before handling our pies, so I appreciated that, and figured that it’s worth mentioning. The place does not have a lot of seating, so better to take it to go. They also serve pizzas here. It is in the same strip mall as Mango’s, Sala Thai and a Subway. Lots of free parking. I would come back if I was in the area.

My favourite place that sells pies in Ottawa. The staff is friendly and their prices are cheap. Most meat pies sold at other bakeries leave you with a heartburn, however, the meat pies in this bakery don’t. I usually get cheese pies with extra cheese and I ask for vegetables(tomatoes, olives, and mint) on top. Also, you need to try cheese saj. Saj is a type of flat bread. They run out fast and it’s best if you go early in the morning!

Bakery and Pastry doesn’t do justice to the variety of products and take-away offered here. They have falafel, baklava, hummus, kibbeh, pickled things and a variety of topped pitas. My favourite is za’atar, having never tried the meat or cheese. One of my first Ottawa experiences was buying a hot pita topped with za’atar on a cool fall day and it was a regular thing for me when I lived near Chinatown. Being a family operated bakery, their hours are not extensive and can be tricky if you work days. Since the bakery sells wholesale to businesses they offer torn or otherwise damaged pitas for a massive discount, something like $ 2 for a bag. Cheap and much fresher than the same pita being resold at nearby grocery stores.

My wife and I lived in the Middle East for many years and one of the local foods we fell in love with is Zaatar — a mixture of olive oil and spices, spread onto fresh baked flat bread. My wife actually missed it more than me(bordering on obsession if you ask me) and so we have stopped in on every Arabic bakery we find to see if they sell it. Finally, we found zaatar bread at Mediterranean Bakery in a little strip plaza on the corner of Alta Vista and Bank(next to Scotia Bank). It is only about $ 2 for a portion — about the size of a frozen personal pizza. My wife was overjoyed with the authenticity of the taste and we have been back many times to recapture some memories. Thankfully, for me, they sell other Arabic and Lebanese baked goods(like this Arabic flat bread with a soft, mozzerella-like cheese — mmmmm). It is a busy, no-nonsense place but at least you get your food quickly.
