Big D’s Dog House & Poutine Emporium

Seriously awesome. This has become a weekly treat. Their eggs Benny poutine on Saturdays is (according to hubby) life changing. I enjoy the junkyard and montrealer.

I guess I must have different taste buds than the other reviewers. I too had the Coney Island dog and found the sauce quite tasless, the bun was or at least seemed to be just an ordinary grocery store variety and the pouting was just ok. As far as portion size they are right they are quite large so based on just that the prices are reasonable. Maybe I will try them again because I hate people that only go once and base everything on that one experience. Maybe something was wrong when I went there. Anyway we will see. For now I can’t in good conscience recommend it.

I saw this food truck near my place for an event, so I stopped to see what they offered. They had a big board with a whole list of hot dogs on it. Prices were very reasonable too. I opted for the 1 gluten free menu which was a gf poutine, made to order. It was really good. The gravy was tasty, they had real cheese curds and the fries were homemade. I will definitely stop next time I see this food truck for another poutine.

First time visitor and soon to be repeat customer. Big D’s has a choice of 15 gourmet hot dogs and poutine using the same toppings on either so you can mix and match. On the owner’s recommendation I chose the Coney Island hot dog but opted for a small classic poutine for lunch. Thank goodness I chose small because I was stuffed. Portions are generous.
The meat sauce on the dog was very tasty in the proper amount so as not to overwhelm the hot dog and make it too messy to eat. Fresh bun, fresh sauce, delicious.
I stuck with the classic poutine without the other toppings so I could taste how the poutine measured up to other food trucks. It was a winner. A small is all I could eat. The gravy was very good, the cheese curds fresh, and it was served piping hot in a waxed cardboard box that you can close up to take out.
The variety of hot dogs is amazing. Check their web site. I have got to return to try some other eclectic flavours. This isn’t health food, this is mental health food.
The truck is located in a car dealer’s lot visible from Hazeldean Rd. Parking is tight and I don’t know if they’ll have room for picnic tables when the weather warms up but I intend to return to find out.
Update 2014-​04-​03: Returned today to try it again. This time I had the Buffalo Soldier dog with Texas Pete hot sauce, banana peppers, and cilantro cream cheese. Very tasty but could be a bit hotter for my tastes.
The small poutine was a bit much last time so I opted for the dog/​fry/​drink combo. At $ 10 this saves 75¢ over à la carte. The fries are supposed to be equivalent to a small, but I couldn’t finish them all.
The dog and fries are served in a single waxed box suitable for takeout. There are a few more flavours I’d like to try so I will return but I think I’ll stick to just a hot dog with my size lunch appetite.
