My parents bought me a half dozen macarons from Delice Royal recently. The macarons themselves are delicious, but the flavouring is very subtle. In fact, the flavours all tasted very similar to me. The macarons had a slight crunch when you bite into them initially, then they were soft and slightly chewy. The texture of the macarons were perfect. They tasted very fresh and I’m sure they were made that morning. They got me 5 different flavours. 2 pistachios, a crème brûlée, a lavender blueberry, an orange blossom and a strawberry. They mostly tasted of almond flavour with a hint of floral. The pistachio and crème brûlée didn’t have any floral taste, but all the other ones did. The strawberry one did not taste like strawberries at all, and the blueberry one did not taste like blueberries. So while the macarons were good quality macarons, the flavours were too subtle and all I tasted was almonds and some also tasted of flowers. They are gorgeous though. Presentation was excellent. These would make a beautiful hostess gift or something like that. Good quality macarons are hard to come by in Ottawa(most places I’ve tried had rock hard macarons), Delice Royal is the best that I’ve tasted so far in Ottawa. They need to make their flavours more pronounced, then they would be neck to neck with Nadege Patisserie in Toronto(which makes the best macarons that I have ever tasted in my life!) Oh yeah, even though they were a gift, I asked my parents how much they were for the benefit of you my fellow Unilocalers: they are $ 1.95 each and if you buy 6 or more, they don’t charge you taxes. They are located in a strip mall so there is lots of free parking.
