I was referred to A Budget by another heating/cooling company after they dropped by to look at my unit. Apparently most heating/cooling companies are not equipped to test and repair high velocity heat pump systems like the one in my townhouse. The assigned technician arrived on time and seemed very professional. One challenge that we faced however was his limited English. Call me crazy but I like a little small talk and a play-by-play from a repair person just to put me at ease. Initially he looked over the systems and told me it had low pressure and so it needed gas. He filled the system but it did not cool afterwards so he started more tests. Watching him work was somewhat relaxing though as he seemed very competent(although not a great communicator). Ultimately the system is still not working and I’m out $ 250 without really understanding what the potential issues are. Ironically when we opened the unit there was a previous service tag inside and when I called that company they seemed waaaay more useful. I’ll be getting a second opinion before following up with A Budget… Is it really this complicated???

I hired this firm back in 2005 to replace the wall unit I had in my condo. Two of their servicemen came by and grumbled testily when I asked them to remove their shoes at the door. They did take my old unit for free but clumsily shoved cardboard boxes into the hole in my wall. I took out their boxes and recovered the hole so squirrels wouldn’t climb in through the gaping holes the servicemen left. The head office ordered the new unit and promised it would be there in a week. The unit arrived on time but they said that the flange(a frame to seal the gap between the wall and the unit) was on back-order and would arrive within the week. I called a week later and they said that the flange should be there in three days. I called 4 days later and they promised and swore up and down that the flange was just about to cross the border and should be there after the weekend. I called and they said that the flange was bound to arrive any day. Turns out, they didn’t need the flange to install the unit. They discovered this from a retired AC installer who was in town(he lived in the Maritimes) that Styrofoam would work just as well until the flange arrived. He graciously offered to install it and, fortunately, caught them just as they they were planning to cut the specialised appliance electrical plug off the unit and tape a standard 120-volt plug in its place. He told me when he was installing the unit that he patiently had to explain to ABudget that the special plug was specifically designed so that it wouldn’t plug into a 120-volt outlet and start a fire. When the flange finally arrived, ABudget called and promised that the two servicemen would be there to install it the following day. They neither showed nor called. When I followed up, ABudget apologised profusely and said that they would be there the following day. They neither showed nor called. A supervisor apologised profusely and then promised that they would absolutely, positively, be there the following Tuesday by noon or they would credit $ 100 to my credit card. I made $ 100 on Tuesday. So, yeah. That’s what to expect from ABudget. Any questions why they got a 1 star?
