Sushi Mori is only a couple of blocks away from where we live and we love the idea of supporting neighborhood businesses. Still, this place has disappointed each and every time we gave it another shot. The prices are at least 30% over other sushi places of the same caliber; but the quality and quantity of dishes are both inferior. Even so, proximity is sometimes a plus and last night was an example of that so we went ahead and placed an order because we didn’t feel like driving to our favorite in-and-out kind of sushi place(Incidentally, it is Aka Tombo on the 700-block Lonsdale) Among a few other dishes, we had goma-ae and salmon and tuna sashimi donburi. The goma-ae was the worst I had ever had, it might as well have been called dry shredded spinach with a few sesame seeds on top, it had no sauce to speak of whatsoever. But I would have been ok to let that go if I didn’t feel insulted when I made a call to them about the other dish, the donburi. The tuna on that thing was frozen solid! I had time while I waited for it to thaw so I called them to mention that. First the lady who took the call said«that’s how you know it’s fresh, it’s good» then passed the phone to the chef who, literally after 10 seconds of silence because he didn’t know what the heck to say, came up with«some people like it like that, I like it like that». No apology, no nothing. They have forever lost a neighborhood customer.

Ive been frequenting Sushi Mori for over a year now since it’s the closest sushi to my workplace. However with the latest round of price increases(30% in some cases!) I’ll be making the effort to go a little further down the road. The quality is decent, not delicious and certainly not to the level they’re charging now. And the portions are slowly turning into more rice than fish. ps the spicy tuna isn’t spicy, so don’t waste your time ;)

All I have to say is: $ 5.5 for a freaking Yam/Avocado roll? Are you freaking kidding me? OVERPRICED and the quality is poor.

The sushi here is average at best. The location’s not bad either because it’s not far from places like Cleveland Dam, Capilano suspension bridge & Grouse mountain. So it’s not too far from tourism areas. At first I liked it, but as soon as they’ve been opened for a little over a few months, their portions had shrunken down while their prices had either stayed the same or went up. Since their business had started to slow down, the freshness of the sushi isn’t great either. As a typical restaurant that started out great, obviously has starting to fail. The only good thing about this place is that they are close to Cleveland Dam & Grouse Mountain, like literally within 5 or so minutes away from both places by car or bus, so for any tourists or anybody that wants to grab a quick bite of sushi could check this place out. Otherwise I don’t think this place is really worth checking out at all as there are much better places to go if you want a better quality sushi, but there are places that’s worse than this place though.

This small shop looked promising(nice location, cute interior with evidence of Japanese ownership) but was thoroughly disappointing. The sushi(nigiri style) was poor. Ikura was not fresh — we speculated it was from a jar. Tuna(advertised as an indeterminate toro) was unrecognizable as such. Unagi was passable. Tamago was flavorless and stale. Rice was dry and cold, and the cuts of fish ill-fitted to the nigiri. Shocked to find such poor product so close to Vancouver.

ok, i’ve changed my mind. this restaurant is no longer worth it… the ownership has changed and so have the chefs. the portions are tiny and ridiculously priced. the menu collapsed without same of their old specialties like eeel roll number 1. i’m sooo not coming back.

Man. Terrible luck with sushi during my finals week. So, I walk dogs near Cleveland Dam, and needed to eat before heading to my test. I had salmon and tuna sashimi, and a spider roll. The sashimi was sort of frozen still. I hate that. Then, when I went to pay, they charged me an extra $ 3. Not that big of a deal, but when I asked why, the girl said they gave me an extra piece of salmon sashimi. Ummm… I didn’t ask for any extra salmon, and I didn’t look closely enough at the menu to see how many pieces I got for the price. I really don’t like people running scams.

We got the Sushi Mori Lunch Special which is this HUGE bento box with so much yummy food it’s ridiculous. Service is quick and easy. Parking is on the street. Right on the way up or down from the Grouse Mountain gondola, the Capilano Dam, and the suspension bridge. I’ve never had a more satisfying sushi experience, and cheap too!
