This review is purely for their macarons. The other desserts look great, but I’m a woman on a mission — and that’s to find the best macaron shop in every place that I visit. My sister-in-law found this shop for me, and I think she may have just hit the jackpot on this one — 26 flavors of macarons, available daily. Heaven! Let’s start with the basics. Smooth, crunchy exterior shell — check! Perfectly puffed foot — check! Moist, cakey interior — check! Creamy ganache filling — check! Now on to the flavors — they ranged from fruity, tangy, chocolate-y, creamy… and they have innovative ones like balsamic vinegar, poppy flower and chocolate sesame. The one thing that I really liked was how all the flavors had just the right amount of sweetness. I’ve had macarons that gave me headaches because they were just a tad too sweet. I tasted all 26 here, and only the crème brûlée and maple taffy flavors were on the borderline — but still ok in my book. My favorite flavors were chocolate-passionfruit, chocolate-hazelnut, lime basil, raspberry-rosemary and fleur de sel(caramel). Their macarons actually come from Point G boutique pastries, which is based in Montréal and headed by 2 awesome Québécois chefs. They have dozens of outposts in Montréal, but Sweets Pastry Shop seems to be their only macaron supplier in the GTA. So ignore the bland location at Heartland Center — it’s definitely worth going to, unless you don’t mind the 5 hour drive to Montréal. Now, why just 4 stars? Because when you’re selling fancy sweet treats like macarons, I expect service to match. Granted I arrived at the end of the day with a 3-year old in tow, but when I’m spending $ 2 a macaron and getting the full 26 pack, a little smile would be appreciated. So I just ordered to go and savored my treats at home. I would still recommend this place as its rare to find the quality and selection that they offer. I hope this place finds a good following so that I can bask in macaron glory every time I return to T.O.
