What a great spot. Price were great, food is fresh, tastes amazing. Friendly and helpful server. Not to mention the chef came to check how we were doing. Parking isn’t the easiest but that is the case with any place downtown.

On our first attempt to dine here during Burger Week, eager to try their offering with a piece of fried provolone, my fiancée and I were greeted by a sign saying that they were closed for the evening. A post on their social media outlets would have been even nicer. The second attempt was much more successful, arriving at old people dinner time so that I could make a night shift and she a class. It’s not a particularly big space, with some awkwardly open stretches. The palette is a mix of light browns, beiges, oranges and teal-ish blue. Like many restaurants and hotel restos especially, they’re going for that modern vintage vibe. There’s some tables with cosy looking couches, one of which we grab, a small banquette against the back wall, regular tables, and couches and chairs around a fake fireplace and TV. All told it sits 50 – 60, including the bar area. There were a couple other couples there, plus a handful of guys at the bar, not bad for just after opening on a Monday. We both went for the Burger Week option, and I got the steal of a deal which was the BW meal plus a 20oz Garrison beer for another $ 1. One dollar! It was a hefty plate of food that came, a thick patty and the rest of the plate filled with fries. The plentiful fries were good, a deep golden brown and crispy to the last fry. The thick patty suffered from being a bit dry and rubbery, but it kept me full for several hours into my night shift that night. The slice of breaded and fried provolone was great — super crispy, with the cheese stretching nicely with each bite, and it added a bit of saltiness and that slight provolone funk. The garlic chili sauce gave a mild kick to the burger as well. The pale lettuce and tomato could have been left off, as their out-of-season quality(or lack thereof) just detracted from the burger. The executive summary of the meal was basically, «great fries, missed potential on the burger». The service was super friendly and helpful, which seems to be a trend at the hotel restos. Consummate pros. Canvas is a cool little spot with a name and décor that are trying too hard, but I was glad to swing by and not have to put up with the lines and waits at some of the Burger Week superstars.
