I’ve been walking past Alex Oh Sushi for months now, and am so glad I finally went in. My friend and I shared the Lunch Rolls B and the Alex Oh Special Roll. I wasn’t sure it’d be enough, even with the soup and salad that came with the lunch special, but man, was it ever. The lunch special was delicious and plentiful and I really enjoyed the soup. The Alex Oh Special Roll, however, stole the show. The perfect combination of spicy, crispy, buttery and fresh. Everything was so fresh, and Alex took so much time to make the presentation above and beyond anything I’ve seen before. One of the reviewers seemed unhappy that this place wasn’t the same as Wasabi House. It’s not. It’s better. This is a higher class sushi and a more upscale restaurant. If you want freebies and happy hours, head on up to Quinpool. If you’re after a quality experience, and the best sushi in town, Alex is your man.

Really loved my experience here. Every roll we ordered was above and beyond in terms of flavour and presentation. The yokohama roll was a perfect compromise for me and my husband who is kinda picky when it comes to exploring sushi. The 15% off coupon in this months coast, makes trying out this place especially worth a shot.

New champ for Halifax sushi! Alex Oh puts a lot of care in to their sushi and the prices are more than reasonable. The service is always friendly and not rushed.

Great prices and lovely service. The food has been delicious each time I’ve been, and as a vegetarian there are many great options! Easy going atmosphere and the first sushi venue I tried in Halifax; very pleasant.

Great service and quality of the food. Did a takeout order and paid cash to get the 15% discount. The server and chefs were friendly, they provided us with complimentary green teas while we waited to pick up out take out order(we were about 10 minutes early for the pickup time, which was agreed to be 25 minutes after our phone order). Seating is limited inside, when we went by however there was available seating, a big change from what we are used to with Wasabi House, where we are used to waiting for a table(especially during happy hour). The reason for 3 rather than 5 stars is due to the portions, while it was a low price it was probably the smallest serving of the seaweed salad I’ve encountered. The rolls were also on the small side and it may seem strange but getting free extra rolls has become an expectation after frequent dining at Wasabi House. There didn’t seem to be happy hour so the price was also higher than a usual happy hour excursion at Wasabi House with a similar order(5 rolls to seaweed salads). I was left with wishing I had gone with Wasabi House, dealing with the further distance and an almost certain wait to pick up an order or get a table in exchange for larger portions, a cheaper price and extra rolls to leave us feeling stuffed with leftovers. My guess is that the portions and price are also what led AlexOh to a bronze, rather than silver or gold in the Coast’s Best Of, as the quality and service were great. If they pumped up the portions and started throwing in free rolls, rather than using a card system where you get a free roll after 10 purchases and started doing a discounted happy hour they would have real potential for 5 stars.

During our short stay in Halifax we came here for dinner, and went straight back for lunch the next day. The freshness of the food, the skill with which it was prepared and the care that went into the plating — this is one of the best sushi that I’ve ever eaten outside of Japan. Go for the sushi and rolls and have a blast!

Great tasting and very beautiful plating! Alex Oh has a simple and straightforward menu with very nice service and good food every time I go. Some of my favorites include: Tempura A(the best tempura I’ve had in the city so far with a yummy dipping sauce), Dragon’s Paradise Roll(sweet and savory at the same time), Wakame Salad and my boyfriend loves the Salmon Love Roll, Combo C Dinner Rolls, and Alex Oh Special Roll(he is always impressed by the large proportion of fish in every roll he gets!). Keep up the good work!

Perfect little place for lunch! Just finished enjoying a lunch special for $ 12 which included a small delicious salad and a nice warm soup and 27 rolls!(9 each of 3 different types). The staff was amazingly friendly. Place is very clean. Will return.

Felt like going for Japanese for lunch today, so Googled places downtown to see if there were any within walking distance of my work that I’ve never tried before. Found one on Queen St that I was planning on going to, but as I was walking on Dresden Row, I saw this place, looked at its menu in the window, and decided to try it instead.(Maybe the other place some other day soon.) In my half hour there, two other tables were taken and a couple of take-out orders. It is not a busy day in the city whatsoever, so figure this place normally would be a little busier at lunch time. Very small and basic inside with seven casual black tables, white walls, minimal décor. Was greeted immediately and think I was the first customer of the day. Took a 2-seater by the window. As with my experience in every Japanese restaurant I’ve ever been to, very friendly service. Good ‘crazy vegetable’ roll(yam & avocado with a semi-spicy orange sauce that wasn’t named on the menu), although the pieces are cut quite large and I find it’s hard to eat when that happens. I have to hold my napkin over my mouth while chewing because my mouth is so stuffed. LOL Standard, good edamame. Very strange but funny, a single grape in a little bowl was brought with the bill. In lieu of a candy perhaps? Yes, I’d go back and try something else another day.

I eat here not once, not twice, but 3 times before I wrote this review. It was so good the first time I thought maybe it was a fluke. But no, each time I returned it was consistently amazing. Honestly, the first time I went it took my friend some convincing to go as he had never heard of it before. But afterwards he proclaimed it his new favorite sushi spot in Halifax. Everyone I’ve taken there has been blown away. I don’t pretend to be a sushi expert, but the sashimi at Alex Oh was the best I’ve ever had. Their sashimi menu changes a lot, and they have really interesting options like tuna belly or flounder(in addition to the usual stuff you’d expect). Not only was the quality of the food amazing, but the presentation is cool too. Even the miso soup was slightly different than other places. I strongly recommend this place. If you go, get the sashimi dinner and a bottle of sake and you’ll leave very happy.

I bought some standard rolls(dynamite, California, tuna, etc) for take away and was very pleased. The prices are very good, the food was well prepared and fresh. They included a couple of misos and some inari on the house. The service was excellent. I look forward to going back and eating in the cute, modern dining room.
