If you’re looking for a quaint place in Gatineau to take your sweetheart for a romantic candlelit dinner… this probably isn’t the place. BUT, if you want a great meal, served by friendly staff in the company of equally friendly locals, you can’t beat this place. Top it off with reasonable prices and you’ve got a truly winning combination. Ended up here on Valentine’s morning and really enjoyed it(but not because I was solo). The steak and eggs was recommend by the very friendly server and and excellent suggestion it was. Steak and eggs were cooked exactly as ordered and was accompanied by a mixture of onions, peppers and mushrooms. A small side of potatoes topped of a tasty plate. If you like experiencing a spot that locals frequent you will enjoy the atmosphere here. A number of the other patrons were visiting before heading to work in the immediate vicinity and the conversation was light and lively. I will suggest that if you choose to visit @ 7AM on the coldest day of the year(–35C) and decide to sit beside the window in only a t-shirt(as the guy across the restaurant did) that you wear thick socks. This is an old building so, while the service is warm, the temperature isn’t necessarily balmy. Welcome to winter in Canada.

Went here for a lazy Saturday brunch. Obviously popular with the locals, which is generally a good sign. Service was prompt and no-nonsense. Regular breakfast includes three eggs(as opposed to the standard two), jam is homemade. I had veggie Benedict and the hollandaise sauce is to die for! Potatoes are amazing. Worth a visit if you’re in Hull.

I love this place and have been coming here for years. I can’t stop in Ottawa without a trip to Chez Barbe. Very local cliental, with a very local attitude. The best breakfast around and at a fair price. Apparently this place holds its place in history as one of the longest running business in the city. I can see why. When you cross the bridge from Ottawa to Quebec, and drive down the road to Barbe you will start to feel like you are in a different world and you are. You are in Chez Barbes world. I’ve been here with many friends including Eddie and they all loved the breakfast and the home feeling. I give it 5 stars because they deliver exactly what you expect for a place like this and they do it very well!

A straight-ahead greasy spoon offering Québécois basics at reasonable prices. Ten minutes from Parliament Hill across the river, this place feels like small-town Quebec. Friendly and unpretentious, lacking any kind of décor except a few bits of Habs memorabilia. Sign inside hints this place has been around a long, long time. Stopped in for a casual breakfast with visiting family. Ordered the basic breakfast, the special, and pancakes for the kids. The basic breakfast delivers decent eggs, tasty bacon or sausage and solid breakfast potatoes. The potatoes were a bit under seasoned but a little salt and pepper fixed them up. The special comes with serious beans, a slice of meat and tourtière. Truly a huge meal. Toast was generously buttered and served with home-made jam. Everyone gobbled it up, and we don’t usually like toast. I credit the generous butter. On the menu board were the specials for lunch including pea soup and smoked meat. I am sure they are the real deal. This place is the opposite of fancy. I loved it.

I went here after being lost in Gatineau for a couple hours. I loved it! It is quaint and tucked away. The décor is a bit dated but it adds to the charm of the«oldest» restaurant in the town. The low slung ceilings in the dinning room really make the place feel cozy. I hade a poutine/club sandwich/pea soup. The place claims to make authentic«Canadian» food, and they delivered. The poutine was smoking and rich, which a dark meaty gravy, it wasn’t too salty. The cheese curds squeaked against my teeth. The club sandwich was large, and nicely presented. Can’t complain. The pea soup was so savoury, thinking about it now makes my mouth salivate. mmmmmm. Very fresh tasting, with strips of cut bacon. My partner had the breakfast with two eggs, homefries, bacon, and toast. It also came with homemade jam and a slice of cantaloupe. I drank the jam right out of the container because my gf didnt want it. The slice of cantaloupe looked it had been sitting out all day, but then again, we went at 2pm. The homefries were tossed with diced onions, herbs, and tomatoes. I sampled of them, and it was brilliant. It popped in my mouth and complimented the breakfast nicely. Total billing including, 2 pops, was $ 23. Large portions, and excellent value.

Everything I was looking for. After a long couple weeks, I wanted a taste of «home»(I’m from Montréal) do I found this place. Quiet and tucked away, exactly what I wanted. Fantastic staff. All around. And well made home food. Loved it. If your ever Ottawa bound, head over for a taste.
