Oh wow, these sandwiches are HUGE and DELICIOUS! I was introduced to this place by a colleague and it truly is a hidden gem. I had the Montréal Smoked Meat sandwich and he had the Spicy Italian. We split and exchanged a half of each so we could both try. The Montréal Smoked Meat was huge, so much meat piling out. Great bread, good mustard, the meat was tender and great. There felt like a little something missing though — just a little tanginess that I wanted. Maybe it needed a bit more mustard or more of the Montréal seasoning on the meat. It was still really good though. The Italian sandwich was awesome. Just delicious, lots of meat, nicely laid out, and had that nice little kick to it. They also make their chips fresh right there! Yum!

There was quite a buzz that surrounded these guys that made me want to try their version of Montréal Smoked Meat Sandwich when I went to Taste of Edmonton last weekend. In my opinion, overall it’s a good sandwich. It just wasn’t as good as I thought…

What up son? I’ve heard rumblings about Sandwich & Sons ever since it opened and even though it’s only a five minute drive from my work, I hadn’t been yet. Well, that was rectified when a friend and I decided to check them out for their foie gras Fridays. The place was slammed when we arrived at noon. Parking is cramped and limited. The line literally curled around the restaurant, I was pretty surprised although I really shouldn’t be, seeing as how Edmontonians completely adore sandwich shops in town(Elm Café, Farrow, Jacqueline’s are a few that come to mind). The menu is concise but I like that. I’ll take a small selection done well over a large one every time. It seems like there are six mainstays and a special Friday(note: they are only open Monday to Friday for lunch!). Seriously, such a genius idea, find a niche and run with it. Trip#1 — Daily soup($ 3.00) — the soup of the day when we went was smoked turkey and roasted cauliflower. The soup was creamy and had real pieces of turkey in it. I couldn’t even tell that the base was cauliflower(funny enough, I was talking with some friends about cauliflower and turns out you can use it as pizza crust?!) but the soup was smooth and refreshing. — Montréal Smoked Meat($ 12.00) — we decided to share our sandwiches so that we could try both. My friend was debating between the smoked meat and roasted chicken(cranberry sauce = my crack) but obviously, we ended up with the smoked meat. The rye bread is so picturesque. It went well with the smoked meat but this ain’t no Schwartz’s style of smoked meat. But that’s a given. Not bad for Edmonton standards. The homemade mustard gave a nice zing to it. — Foie Gras Fridays($ 17.00) — this was what we came to S&S for. Foie Gras Fridays. Lo and behold, this edition of foie gras was sandwiched between two pieces of fluffy French toast. Yuuum. Not to mention drizzeled, okay more like smothered in maple syrup. Verdict? For $ 17.00, it’s definitely overpriced. The sandwich itself is small and packs lots of flavour(read: it’s heavy) but I doubt I would have been full from just the foie gras sandwich itself. Keep that in mind if you want something more substantial. Trip #2 — Daily soup and drink combo($ 4.00) — roasted sweet potato with brisket. The soup was delicious — creamy and a subtle sweetness from the sweet potatoes. It reminded me of butternut squash soup but much lighter in flavour and texture. — Roasted turkey($ 11.00 — turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy on a roll. A solid portion of tender, moist dark turkey meat. The sandwich was good but it needed WAY more cranberry. Cranberry sauce is my crack/kryptonite. Sadly, I could barely taste any cranberry sauce in our sandwich. — B.L.T.($ 10.00) — thick cut, double smoked bacon, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato on sourdough bread. A generous slab of bacon that was crunchy and not too greasy. The sourdough is lightly toasted/warmed up. A classic done right! Trip #3 — Grilled cheese($ 7.00) — cheddar, smoked gouda, monterey jack with an artichoke spread. I was stuffed silly from lunch elsewhere but Pboy hadn’t ate so I tagged along and introduced him to S&S. He went with the grilled cheese and loved it. The cheese oozes out, the panini gives it a nice crunch and the artichoke spread adds a little je né sais quoi to the mixture. Anyways, I dig what Sandwich & Sons are doing. The guys making the sandwiches are impressively fast and efficient, friendly and it’s my ‘hood. North side is pretty deserted so a new spot is always welcome in my books.

4.5 Stars. Tried the smoked meat sandwich. Finally an old school deli style smoked meat sandwich in Edmonton. Piled high with tender marbled smoked meat on rye bread with homemade mustard. Not quite matching Schwartz’s(my gold standard) but getting pretty close. Chips were excellent also. A bit perplexed by the location. Far too hip for the industrial strip in which it is located. Will for sure return.

A friend and I had lunch at Sandwich and Sons for the first time today. A clean utilitarian space, with efficient no nonsense service in a light industrial area in the city NorthWest. There is a food truck feel to the place and the menu We both ordered the Montréal Smoked meat sandwich. We were served a generous portion of moist, almost oily, meat between two slabs of thick cut, slightly stale, marbled rye bread. A thin layer of grainy home made mustard(a l’ancienne?) had been spread on the bread and some cabbage resembling but not tasting like sauerkraut was spread below the meat. A quarter of a cucumber pickle and a bag of home made potato chips completed the serving. No other mustard(e.g. yellow) was available. The sandwich was an edible meat sandwich but it is is clear that there is no deli pedigree in this kitchen, so if you are looking for a classic Montréal style smoked meat sandwich this is not it. The thin blondish hair I found in my sandwich did not add to the experience. We both have dark hair and two of the three(blondish) food servers were not wearing anything on their heads. There are probably better options in their menu. And for sure in the city

Much like duck, if grilled cheese is ever on a menu, I will most likely order it. Add to the mix a new sandwich shop with a focus on local producers and craft products(who doesn’t like a new place to check out, really), then you’ve got a deal. Chef Alex Sneazwell’s latest venture, Sandwich and Sons, is just that. Located just north of the Yellowhead Trail on 156 St and 131 Avenue, Sandwich and Sons is in one of the oddest spaces ever, nestled in between industrial businesses and serving up a handful of sandwiches to the surrounding crowd for lunch. It makes sense though to have a small deli storefront to support the full service catering business and since opening two weeks ago, Edmontonians have responded with an amazing interest. I’m not the only one who wants a good sandwich! I was lucky enough to have a weekday off last week(they’re only open Monday to Friday) and enlisted my friend Josh, my personal garburator(official job title since 2006), to go check it out. The menu is displayed on the side wall with a space for feature sandwiches. All orders include a side of freshly fried house chips and a slice of made-in-house pickle, which are also available for purchase by the jarful. The Montréal smoked meat calls out to most people, definitely grabbing Josh’s attention. Sometimes meat intimidates me. Just knowing that a sandwich I can’t even properly hold makes me scared. I’m a wuss, I know. But that’s why bringing Josh is always a good idea, and nobody ever complains about the abundance of moist, tender, smoked beef brisket in between two slices of rye. House mustard and sauerkraut round out the sandwich, making the classic Montréal sandwich just a little bit more closer to home. For those wondering, I did have to take out a chunk of meat to properly hold it in my hands. This isn’t a bad thing. As for myself, I ordered the grilled cheese. Who the heck orders that when fried bologna, smoked turkey, and spicy italian are all viable options? This girl. I just cannot resist. Plus I could see the panini grill making somebody else’s order ooze a combination of old cheddar, Monterey Jack, and smoked gouda. Yeah. It was amazing. It was crisp. It wasn’t greasy. And the artichoke spread on the sourdough bread was spot on. Winnnneeeeer. Chef Sneazwell is still working on building his ingredient sources, the meats currently from Sangudo Meats and the bread from a variety of sources. He hopes to source his bread from Vienna bakery and once his convection oven gets delivered, to start making his own. I don’t know when I’ll ever have a Friday lunch off, but Foie Gras Friday is quickly becoming a thing, a Vietnamese banh mi-inspired sandwich featuring braised bacon, mortadella, pickled carrots and herbs and duh, foie gras pâté. It made Josh go back(lucky bum!) and now I might be responsible for his sandwich addiction. Oops. If you’re in the area or have a mad hankering for some quality classic sandwiches, head over to Sandwich and Sons!

Sandwich & Sons is located just north of the Yellowhead on 156 Street in an industrial part of Edmonton. It’s a new deli-style concept opened by Chef Alex Sneazwell(formerly of The Manor, Von’s, El Cortez) offering soups and sandwiches during the day from Monday to Friday. The menu itself is simple and is written in chalk on the wall. Classic sandwich combinations are put together with an emphasis on using local ingredients and housemade fixins. Each sandwich includes a side of housemade chips and a pickle, and the price is inclusive of tax. Daily soup and drinks are available for $ 3 each, and the housemade mustard and pickles are also available for purchase to take home. I stopped by for a quick lunch today with my boyfriend, and of all the choices on the menu the top contender for us was the Montréal Smoked Meat sandwich($ 12). Shaved brisket, house mustard and sauerkraut are piled high between the two warm slices of rye, there’s no shortage of meat here! The brisket comes from local producer Sangudo Meats, and this meat is fantastic. The brisket is sous vide for 24 hours then smoked with pecan wood. The resulting brisket is tender, flavourful, and not overly smoky. Grainy mustard is one of my favourite things in sandwiches, and everything combined with lightly pickled sauerkraut made this sandwich a hit. Our other top choice was the Spicy Italian sandwich($ 10). Hot salami, mortadella, artichoke spread, pickled peppers and havarti are placed inside of a roll and squished inside a panini press. The resulting sandwich is crispy, has a kick of heat and is oozing with melted cheese. The sandwich doesn’t have the grandeur of the Smoked Meat, but it’s a pretty solid sandwich on its own. I did find it to be a bit greasy, but that’s just the nature of the ingredients used. Other than the sandwiches, the chips on the side weren’t too greasy and just lightly salted for a bit of flavour. I was a little sad that Sandwich & Sons didn’t make dill pickles to accompany their sandwiches, but the tangy pickles still had a bit of bite that I enjoyed. In conversation with Chef Sneazwell, he mentioned that the smoked brisket, turkey, bologna and bacon are all supplied by Sangudo Meats. It’s great to see a small sandwich shop supporting local in the ways that they can! From social media it looks like Foie Friday is going to be a thing, so you foie gras fans should flock there to celebrate the end of this week with a foie gras banh mi. Sandwich & Sons is open Monday-Friday, and catering is available too. Stop by and give them a try if you’re in the area — the sandwiches are solid.
