Good selection of electronic/experimental stuff. Super helpful staff. Would swing back again when I am in town.

Only been here a few times but I managed to find some pretty rare items I don’t think I could find anywhere else just browsing around. They even stock experimental musak too, which was a surprise to me. Never had anything bad to say about this place. Friendly staff that will order items in for you and they will carry local artists releases too. Easy 5⁄5 for me. Wish the store was bigger though.

This place is great. Lots of hard to find stuff and if they don’t have what you’re looking for, they can usually order it in for you! Also a lot of used stuff, if you’re on a budget(aren’t we all) so you can build your collection at a decent price! Very knowledgeable staff, and the owner is almost always around, so you can ask questions and get answers on the spot! I frequent this establishment, and wouldn’t hesitate to tell people to go here.

What sets Listen apart from the other indie record shops in the city is that they seem to cater to the contemporary, modern rock, Sonic 102-listening crowd. They’re frequented by the fedora-wearing music geeks with black-framed glasses, usually seen carrying a leather shoulder bag with a a big flap(presumably to carry their records in.) If you can imagine a universe where Joy Division never broke up, the Chemical Brothers became the new Beatles, and Lisa Loeb is still hot, than you will enjoy Listen Records & CDs. The staff at Listen is awesome. Very nice, personable guys with a lot of patience. My wife went there recently with a long list of items that she was seeking out for me. She said that the dude working the check-out was totally cool and didn’t mind looking up every item on the list to see if it was available, and if not, where she could find it. He didn’t even exhibit any signs of musical snobbery towards my classic rock and metal leanings. She came home full of raves(and records). If you’re into metal or older rock music, Listen won’t be your ideal stop, but it’s great for people who aren’t into mainstream stuff. Listen has a demographic in mind and they who know their target audience is.

A very cool independent music store that carries CDs and vinyl, both new and used. Although the space is small, the place is packed with music. I was amazed by the variety of music here — everything from classic rock to hip hop to new releases. I ended up leaving with a used Gogol Bordello CD and the latest from Great Lake Swimmers. Serious music fans in Edmonton have to check out Listen.

If you like music, low prices, a large selection and a great staff then you will like Listen Records &CD’s. It’s not like HMV because it doesn’t have mostly popular music, it has all kinds. The staff is extremely helpful and know their music. If you tell them what kind of music you like they are always good at suggesting more music you might like. Also if you really can’t find what you’re looking for, they will gladly order it for you. I find this store to be better than HMV only music they don’t mainly cater to the mainstream.

I haven’t bought my music anywhere else but here in Edmonton, I first discovered it during one of my many Fort McMurray to Edmonton visits where I would spend my hard earned oil money(eye roll) and would go blow it all in a record store. I remember having a big pain in the ass time finding it because I was 15 at the time, new to the city, had no idea where I was going and was walking to it from 110th and Jasper. The prices are decent there, I would say low in more things then they are expensive in others, but I don’t mind paying the extra dollars to them at all. The staff, though generally I only ever see Kris working there, are friendly and very knowledgeable. It’s great going in there and saying I listen to this this and this, what else would I like? It’s been a pretty good way of me finding new music! Huge selection to choose from definitely and a lot of left field and other misc. weird things you will be in store for when you go visit and spend all your hard earned monies.

Okay, so I don’t keep up-to-date with current music like the folks at Listen do, and because of that, I’ve heard only a fraction of the stock these guys have streaming into their shop and off the shelves at what is reportedly a truly alarming rate. But if the latest vinyl(and some CD) releases in indie, electro, garage, reggae and all those other obscure genre classifications tempt you, Listen is the place to be. Prices are low, staff are knowledgeable, and they’ll happily order in anything your heart desires provided they have access to it through their distributors. Which they probably do. Record junkies should be paying regular visits, but if it’s out of the way, get on their mailing list to see what’s come in.
