Hey there awesome diner in the heart of Downtown Edmonton I almost missed you walking down the street! When I walked in, I just kinda grabbed a seat at the bar on a nice Sunday morning ready for some quick breakfast and that’s exactly what I got. Considering the price, it was fantastic. I got an omelette, hash browns, toast, bacon, and coffee for around 12.50CAD. It was very cheap for all that and was everything you expect from a run-of-the-mill diner. Except the Coffee. Weak coffee. Watery coffee. Please for the love of god, put more coffee grounds in your machine. Charge more if you have to, but please, God, for everything that is right with diners, strengthen your coffee. It would be perfect for breakfast if it had stronger coffee. (Cash only).

I’ve become a breakfast regular here and it is consistently awesome. Nothing about this place has changed since it opened. There aren’t many old school diners in these parts so I appreciate that. Great food, prices and service.

The quintessential greasy spoon! Adorably old fashioned and down to earth. The food is basic, home style cooking. Nothing fancy here, but they don’t pretend to be either. Breakfast for the win; most items are under $ 12.00. Portions are a good size, and the coffee is hot and keeps coming. I recommend the breakfast burrito. They have several kinds of hot sauce available to spice it up, so you can pick your poison.

This is one of my favorite breakfast places to go to! I have been here a few times now and have always enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the staff. They serve breakfast all day and for a very very affordable price! You can usually order breakfast and coffee for $ 10 or less. The portions are great. Not too much and not too little. They also serve soups, sandwiches and Chinese food. I have only ever had the breakfast though so I can’t comment on the other food they serve. I ordered my usual sausage and eggs served with pan fried potatoes and a side of toast. You can order your eggs however you like them and get to choose between white, brown and rye toast. I ordered my eggs poached soft and dry rye toast. They have jams and peanut butter to choose from. All was tasty and hit the spot. I don’t think much has changed regarding décor since it opened back in 1942, but that is what I love about this place! I enjoy the simplicity of it and it is always clean. If you are looking for a simple hearty and tasty breakfast for a very affordable price, this is your place!

Shocked! My wife went to Commodores with her senior citizen father and had the following experience: in a slow restaurant with 3 staff they were not greeted when they walked in. She had to ask one of the waitresses who was standing there if they should seat themselves. My wife found a piece of hair in her coffee which the waitress replaced after my wife had to get up and find someone to get a new cup. The coffee was replaced with no comment or apology. She was then told by another waitress after she ordered her meal that her and her senior citizen father may have to move to a smaller table because the father didn’t order a meal and the restaurant might get busy over lunch… and when she did receive her omelette she bit into egg shells. The staff was so unfriendly and unwelcoming… not once did she get asked how her meal was. To top it off she was charged for everything. We love small businesses and restaurants and wish we could support this one but it was a HORRIFIC experience and we will never go back. We DONOT recommend this place at all!!!

If you want a greasy spoon old style diner, this is the place for you. It’s cash only and it’s pretty cheap. I’ve only had breakfast in here but it never disappoints.

My Husband and I have been going to the Commodore since before we were married. This place is a true diamond in the rough of downtown. Don’t expect fancy, pretentious, or expensive. This is a little piece of the past where everyone is welcome, young or old, rich or poor, alone or in a group. The food is always good– simple home cooking. Stick to breakfast, pie, or Chinese food. Great coffee. Great toast(it’s not as simple as it sounds) Multiple generations of family work here-owners and servers. Can’t show enough love for this place. Cash only– prices are unbelievable cheap.

Be prepared to have world’s smallest portions. Atmosphere dumpy, food below average. Feel let down by others reviews. My wife said it was the worst food she has ever had. Server was very nice tho.

Was pretty excited to try out this Edmonton landmark of sorts. After just working a 12 hour night shift I showed up at exactly 7am. Coffee was ready to go. Ordered promptly. Standard eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast arrived shortly thereafter. Zero complaints. Maybe the Cash Only part, but that just adds to the charm of the place. I’m full, on the standard food I love for $ 6.50. Goodnight. Protip: All prices are rounded and have tax already included in them. Other restauranteurs: take note.

Here is a simple breakfast place that does all the classics just the way you want. This is not the place to go for anything overly complicated or modern but the perfect place for the basics. In fact Edmonton could use more places like this. It’s a inexpensive ultra casual, hole in the wall with great food and is my go to place for breakfast.

Fantastic little diner spot! Breakfast all day and the food is very tasty. The service is prompt and the food always comes out hot and exactly how you ordered it. I would recommend this place to anyone :)

This place takes diner to a new level. On the surface it is a run of the mill hole in the wall diner. But once the menu is presented the addition of a selection of Chinese food says that this place is more. The prices are low for anything downtown, with all the usual diner fare such as All Day Breakfasts. So far, after multiple visits, the staff not the food has been anything but excellent.

When a friend suggested this for lunch downtown, I immediately asked, «Where?!» I’ve walked by it so many times, and didn’t notice it was there. This HAS to be one of the best kept secrets in downtown Edmonton(though I’m not quite sure the secret hasn’t been let out, it’s always so busy!). This restaurant has been here for years and years, and coming inside is kind of like a time warp– in a good way. It has an authentic diner feel to it, because, well, it is an authentic diner. I ordered breakfast, ham and eggs, which came with toast and potatoes. It was SO good! The kind of home-style cooking that just makes you feel happy. And the price? Out of this world for the portion and quality, $ 8! The service is great as well, with very friendly staff. I also ordered the blueberry pie for dessert, warmed up with ice cream on it, because you have to treat yourself every now and then, right? It was definitely a treat! Tasted just like my grandma’s old fashioned blueberry pie :) I would definitely recommend checking this spot out, for(all day) breakfast and lunch. Make sure you come a little bit early if you want to grab a table, this is a busy spot– especially at lunch! Can’t wait to go again!

Wow! What a pleasant surprise! I’ve lived in Edmonton my whole life, I’ve known of this restaurant forever… in fact I even work right across the street from it! But in all these years, it never once came up as an option to eat here…(to be honest I thought it was just an old skechy diner in downtown). I guess there’s a reason a place like this still exists after all these years, and all other similar businesses of its kind have shut down. Commodore is one of downtown’s best kept secrets for a cheap, unpretentious meal in a very old school diner atmosphere. I met my friend here on a recent Sunday for breakfast(at her suggestion) and was happy to walk into a bustling restaurant in the stark empty downtown core. It’s a seat yourself kinda place with tables along one side of the room, and the other side mostly devoted to retro u-shaped counters with stools set up around. Their menu is sooooo so affordable, and I suppose this is why you see all walks of life here. They serve breakfast all-day, and have a variety of other items such as sandwiches, salads, soups and even Chinese Prairie food!(Who knew?!) My friend and I ordered the bacon and eggs, which came with toast and house made potatoes. The serving size was perfect — not overwhelming large or too small. The plates are served with no interest in plating, just what you ask for. No fuss! I like that! Our server was a bit off her game though. She started off strong, and quite friendly to be honest… but forgot to bring coffee and water for my friend until 20 min later when my friend had to get up and go to the counter to ask. Also, she brought a side of toast that we had requested with no butter, buttered. But she was extremely apologetic. All in all, I would highly recommend this lowkey unpretentious joint for your meal fix! Especially breakfast!

The first thing that has to be said, is that this is the LEAST pretentious restaurant in Edmonton, in addition to being one of the oldest. I first came here as a child in the early 1960’s with my Father, and I still have a weak spot for the old fashioned milkshakes which are still made with an ancient Hamilton Beach mixer. One does not come to the Commodore for culinary inspiration, one comes for good, honest food served up by nice people. Breakfasts,(all day!) burgers, and old fashioned Prairie style Chinese food are the order of the day and the menu alone is high in entertainment value. No other café in town will offer you fried mushrooms on toast… Specials of the day are on the chalkboard behind the old time lunch counter, and are often the best choices. No where else downtown can you get a filet of sole, with veg and mashed potato, soup, dessert and coffee for $ 10.00, including tip. Great value, great atmosphere, great folks, history and a full belly. Bring cash, they do not accept debit or credit cards.

I had the mushroomburger the turkeysalad and the chicken Chop Suey. It was all ok-tasting. Nothing special. Love the diner though.

I want to write another review of Commodore. I was here(again) just last week with the husband. The waitress knew who we were, due to my husband’s insane order of 6 pancakes, 4 sausages, 4 eggs, and a coffee. The waitress almost got the whole order right! And mine too!(mine is a little bit more simple). It’s great that we are establishing rapport, because they already expect us again on Sunday. We love this place, and it’s most definitely our«Sunday Place». Try to stop be from going there on Sundays! Thank you to the staff for being awesome, going above and beyond, and trying to get to know their regulars. Also, the food is great! See you Sunday!

This place has no pretense for being fancy, but it has good inexpensive food for breakfast and lunch and fits the bill as a no-nonsense diner. It even has Chinese food(well, Westernized Chinese food) if you’re into that! It’s really inexpensive, and seems like a step back in time, partially as they only take cash for payment. A group of friends of mine comes here sporadically for brunch on the weekends, and it’s great because you can eat a lot for very little money. It’s also a great stop if you want a huge milkshake. Or to just sit at the counter with some coffee or a newspaper or otherwise just relax for a bit with some food/beverage.

The first thing that I noticed when I walked into The Commodore was that Steven Mandel was sitting at the table next to mine, so to say that this is a classic Edmonton breakfast spot would be an understatement. Everything on the menu is CHEAP! Don’t expect the most luxurious looking of breakfasts, the dishes here are simple and lacklustre. A coffee, french toast, and eggs cost me $ 8. It wasn’t anything special and t wasn’t anything that I couldn’t have made at home– but for that price it’s nice to get out to meet up with some pals and have someone else cook for you. When my friend’s pancakes came out, the server said, «These pancakes actually look pretty good. Usually I don’t want to serve them to people because they look a little burnt.» Take from THAT what you will. I have a soft spot for old diners and for that reason alone, I’ll probably visit more often. It has a cool vintage feel. And any place that serves all-day breakfast is a winner in my books.

Great little breakfast place! Surprised I didn’t know about this until now. Apparently it’s been here a long time. Popped in for breakfast before 9am and it wasn’t too busy. Free parking on the street at meters before 9. Cash only so grab some coin. Had the ham and eggs, was great. I think you get good value for $ 7.50. Nothing fancy but friendly service and old school diner grub. I saw the whole menu and this place looks like it might be great for some comfort food lunch and dinner as well.
