The Wine Shop

Nice selection, nice price range, cute store.
This was first visit and I was happy to be greeted and happy I was offered assistance (a must in wine stores who give a damn). The store is small but big enough. There appears to be a decent selection of hand chosen wines from a variety of countries around the world (lots of French I noticed), some ice wines, dessert wines, lots of nice reds and plenty of whites. There is also a wine tasting area at the back, a cool glass cellar and some chilled whites for tasting.
Overall, a great experience and a joy to have found this store.

A good wine shop is becoming easier to find in Calgary. As one who is very much still an elementary student in the world of wines, this makes me very happy. The extra education and recommendations from shop owners make me want to keep learning more about.
The Wine Shop has been open in Mount Royal Village for about the last 5 months. When I first come through the door, I walk into a narrow store, two aisles wide. It seems a little small. But as I make my walk further into the store, a head pops out from around a corner. Within a few more steps, I see a large wooden table and a room separated from the store with glass. I assume that it’s chilling some bottles of wine. The big wooden table is where many of The Wine Shop’s wine tastings take place.
I’m offered a sample of wine from a small dispenser. From a variety of reds and whites, 6 – 8 different bottles I believe, I choose one of the sweeter whites. It’s okay, it’s 7 minutes to noon. While I sip my sample, I’m asked if there’s any particular wine I’m in search of. I’m in the mood for a sweet riesling, almost a dessert wine, but not quite. Three different bottles are shown to me, ranging in price from $ 15 to $ 35. The $ 15 Gruen is a popular pick it seems. Bottles of this fly off the shelf every week. I pick out this bottle to bring home with me. I’ll save the $ 35 bottle for a special occasion.
Knowledge and attentive, not trying to upsell me on any particular bottle of wine, rather finding the right bottle to suit my particular needs at the moment, The Wine Shop provided me with wonderfully individualized service. As much as this should already be the standard, it’s still refreshing and new. I’m more than happy to watch it become the norm.
