We went to Modern Steak yesterday to celebrate Father’s Day and it was delicious, albeit pricey. My wife loves the beef tartare and she absolutely loved it. We ordered the 36 oz ribeye to share and it was very tender. I also like the fact that they source their meat from Alberta suppliers. We would go back.

Cozy ambiance. Love the menu which describes different cuts of steak along with ratings on tenderness and flavor. There were 4 of us in which 3 wanted medium rare and 1 medium. All steaks came out just as we asked and tasted great! The sides were just ok. Mac & cheese was a bit bland, temperature of others was warm. Service was great. All in all great experience.

This is THEBEST steak house in Calgary. Amazing ambiance, décor, service and DELICIOUS cuts of meat! Had the oysters, gazpacho(so great!!!) and the flat iron steak! I highly recommend the DECADENTMASHPOTATOES and the MAC&CHEESEWITHLOBSTER!(Ok, I had to ask for lobster on the side since my dear friend did not want it in the mac & cheese but… Sooooooo good!!!) These chefs and the staff go absolutely out of their way to provide a fantastic dinner experience. Be hungry and ready to experience food at another level. I am coming back here soon!!! The steak was OUTOFTHISWORLD!!! Thank you for making us feel at home and for those delicious dishes! You guys are AWESOME!!!

I came all the way from Vancouver for the weekend, and I really want to give this restaurant a try. I ordered the California steak in medium rare, however, the first cut was disappointing. The steak was over-cooked, but… the customer service was well accommodating. The manager came over right away, and said their apology. Free dinner with free dessert as well. Things happens but how people handle it matters. I am happy with the second steak they made for me, just right. It worth the price.

Highly recommended for steak! I was recommended the flat iron steak. And it was fantastic — full of flavour and very the tender. Their sides that comes the steak is great and perfect for sharing. If you double up, it’s too much of one side in my opinion.

We went out last night for a nice dinner with friends. This restaurant delivers when it comes to steak and seafood, but misses on many other levels. First of all, despite having reservations, out table was at the top of some stairs, high traffic and loud music made for an unpleasant initial experience. The prawn and scallop appetizers were very good, and both couples ordered the Dry aged Tomahawk Rib-Eye, which was very flavourful. However the Wine List is outrageously expensive-think-3−4x actual cost. We had a Beringer Knights Valley for 89 $, this is a 29 $ bottle. Also the desserts were a catastrophe. We had already send back our«espresso» drinks, as they were cold and thin, no crema at all. The chocolate cake was like eating Mortar and Lath… awful. The cheesecake was ok, but my 14 year old daughter could have come up wit the recipe. At that point, after complaining about the table and sending back the espresso, I just didn’t feel like complaining anymore. 500 $ plus tip… you expect a lot more. Can’t imagine it will stick around for the long haul.

Not good, don’t even bother with the lobster(when we complained that it was dry and crumbly the chef reminded us that we are, in fact, landlocked). For a place with steak in it’s name, they can’t cook a steak. The sides were nice, the cocktails terrible. Such a waste of money. I won’t be going back

We went here for dinner. In a nutshell, it was terrible. The mixed drinks were decent, the service was excellent. However, the food was really bad. Like really, really, bad. Ambiance: What the heck?! I like the change in vibe from the Kensington neighborhood spots but WOW the playlist and music level was insane. They were blasting cheap clubbing music like 50-cent and that Fresh Prince of Bel Air song… not a relaxing or adult environment in which to enjoy an expensive steak. It felt like a wannabe Los Angeles nightclub that serves steak. Very bizarre. Food: If you want an amazing steak in Calgary, this is not the place to go. Grass-fed beef is not tender or very flavorful because it’s grass fed. They serve all grass-fed beef and yes it’s sustainable, but it doesn’t make for a great steak dinner out. I ordered the New York Strip and my date ordered the Rib Eye. The New York was charred completely on the outside and very tough and unflavorful. The charred exterior affected the overall taste of the meat and I couldn’t even taste the flavor of the interior. The rib eye steak was very tough and again, not very flavorful. Both were ordered medium-rare, but came to us medium. The worst part of the meal was our appetizer: Oysters. We ordered a dozen West Coast oysters(Miyagi) because we are oyster connoisseurs. They came to the table and we could smell the stink on them immediately. The waitress said that West Coast oysters smell fishy naturally. I assure you, fresh raw oysters NEVER smell fishy or rank. We each ate two of them without the toppings to make sure they were«ok» and they tasted rotten like sewage. Again, this is NOT normal for FRESH oysters. We complained and the waitress kindly took them back and off our bill.(Thank you to the good service). When we got home after dinner, we started feeling ill about 4 hours later and spent the remainder of the evening vomiting in the bathroom. Our stomachs were in knots and we felt nauseous and sick. We called the owner the next day and he remembered the incident and agreed that the oysters smelled bad. He again told us that the oysters were supposed to be «fishy», which is not correct. He apologized kindly, but offered nothing in return for our meal. We spent $ 150 plus tip for our meal that night and will never be back in there again. Don’t go here.

I have always wanted to try Wagyu steak. I had the petite tender and I have to say it wasn’t any better than any other good steak in town. My wife had the hanger and it had more flavor. Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes were very good side. Stay away from the mushrooms. Overall not a bad experience but for the price I would probably go somewhere else or try something new.

Wonderful experience. Always enjoyed the Muse when in town and this new concept by the owner does not disappoint. From the ambiance and the truffle popcorn starting off our dinner we thoroughly enjoyed our dinning experiece. This is a popular spot so I would make a reservation and if in a hurry, let your server know upfront. We had a great wine from Nappa chosen with help from the somalie to go with the wagu beef we tried. No room for dessert … leaving that for next time.

2 for 2, my second visit in as many months. First time for work with a colleague, second time with my family, both times a great experience. The staff is friendly, the wine selection fine and the steak fabulous. Get a dessert, piña colada bread pudding or the warm chocolate cake are worthy additions to a fantastic dinner. Well done Modern Steak, for a rare experience you can not go wrong.

Oyster Thursday’s!!! $ 1 west coast, $ 2 east coast. We ate so many I won’t even admit. They were delicious. We also had the steak tartare as an appy served with truffle crisps and it was fantastic. For a drink, the old fashioned are also noteworthy. The ambience undeniably does not match the Kensington vibe. That said, overall enjoyable experience and good service.

Came here for The Big Taste YYC2015. I love when I’m able to reserve online ahead of time with such ease! We hoped and prayed that we would be able to find street parking, but sadly not. Luckily there is a parkade right across the street, and evening rates were not too expensive. We were sat on the second level overlooking the convenience store and parkade across the street. We had quite a good time people watching throughout the night. As we waited for our meals, we were provided with a bowl of truffle oil popcorn; which we ate in quick time. Course 1 of our meal was the«mini lobster poutine». It was decadent to say the least. There were actually whole chunks of lobster which we had not expected. I was craving for more of the«lobster gravy» though as the poutine felt a bit dry at the end. Course 2 was the«brant lake waygu — 5oz hanging tender, mashed potato, garlicky green beans, jus». The steak was cooked perfectly. We found the steak to have a bit of chew to it though. I didn’t enjoy the ‘jus’ part of the dish as it overwhelmed the plate way too much, way too heavy on the pepper. I ended up relinquishing a majority of the plate to the bf to enjoy. Course 3 was the«callebaut chocolate mousse». This dish really confused me. Never have I had mousse so stiff. It felt more like soft fudge, the presentation of it was really cute though. We were given very large spoons to eat with, which did not do well for my experience as it was very difficult to get the«mousse» off my spoon; couldn’t get it to fit in my mouth. Overall, I don’t think we got a full experience with our visit here this time. After reading other reviews, I think that if given the opportunity, I would give their steaks one more try before writing it off in my books. Will take note to visit again next time I’m In the area.

One of my favorite places. Great atmosphere and great food. Soup and salad bar is included with most items. Try the steak soup!!! A bit pricey but well worth it in my opinion. I would recommend reservations on the weekends

In one word… astounding. The food, service, atmosphere. All amazing. It is pricey to eat there, but having some discount cards we gave it a shot. We booked a table at 5, which is apparently when they open and when no one else in the city likes to eat on a Sunday, because we were the only ones in the restaurant the entire time we ate. It made it a little awkward, but also made the service extra good due to the personal server. The steak was amazing. So perfect. Didn’t know you could even order steak from a different county of Alberta right off the menu. but you can Highly recommended

I liked the layout and the atmosphere. The service was ok and the food was par for steakhouse fare. I think the value for dollar is not really here. I would like to try again to see if it was just an off night.

I’m not sure what’s going on with the reviews so far for Modern Steak; Nathaniel says this is the«best steakhouse in Calgary», but apparently that’s only worth 2 stars to him. And Christine seems to have meant to leave a review for Montana’s on Sarcee Tr, so good job there… But honestly, this place way exceeded my expectations! I got the TravelZoo voucher(which is a very good deal btw, you should too!), and showed up with my gf for an early Valentines Date. I made reservations beforehand, and with it requested some bubbly served right off the bat without our asking. We arrived and were seated right away by an excitable your lady. When our waitress, Natasha, arrived she was very nice and personable and explained the menu for us, which was quite helpful. Shortly after that our bubbly arrived, right on schedule. Well done. Also the truffle oil drizzled popcorn, which was dangerously good!(Don’t listen the Nathaniel on that one either.) We ordered a couple Oysters on the Half Shell and the Waygu Sliders to start. My gf isn’t so sure about sea crustaceans, but the oysters were so tender and beautifully garnished that she had no problem. The sliders(which feature a brioche bun, btw) were also delicious, and left us wanting more. They were pretty cute too. For the mains my gf got the Brant Lake Waygu NY Striploin, while I got the Heritage Natural Angus Ribeye 4 Week Dry Aged, and for sides we chose the Decadent Mashed Potatoes and Asparagus Parmesan with Sunny Side Egg. Both steaks were astounding! They were cooked to perfection(medium rare, mine tending slightly rarer), with the fatty bits literally melting in our mouths. They were served with a few cooked garlic cloves on the side, which we were encouraged to use as a paste with our steaks, a nice touch. We tried each others steaks, and there was an appreciable difference in taste between them. I found hers to have a delicious, classic NY taste, while mine had a more interesting flavour profile, fuller somehow. We loved them both, and preferred our own. I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve had better steak, anywhere. The sides also impressed. The rich, buttery mash also had a truffle hint to it, so good. The asparagus came with an ever so delicate sunny side egg on it, which dissolved upon touching it, but not before. The effect was coating all the asparagus and parmesan flakes(which were large and obviously fresh) in the yolk. These were very good, although a few of the thicker ends could have been cooked a little more, as a few were just slightly tough. For dessert we got the Crème Brullee, which was also delicious.(Do I detect a pattern?) It was about room temp, with a perfect«cavity glass» on top of caramelized sugar that you had to break to get at the decadent custard inside. As for service, we were quite impressed. Our waitress was very personable, and knowledgeable. She seemed to know the menu well, and shared what she liked on it. Before the mains she came by with our choice of steak knives, which was a nice little touch. This place is only a few months old as of this writing, so perhaps the previous reviewers experienced a staff that hadn’t gotten it down yet, which is understandable. But know that if you get Natasha, you’ll be happy. The whole evening we were commenting on how pleasing to the eye the while place was. It’s an interesting layout encompassing a 4 or 5 split level with an open area in the middle in which you can see from top to bottom. Into this they’ve painted everything flat black and added incredibly beautiful(and modern looking) fixtures and chandeliers. Seriously, the designer of this space had a vision, and they nailed it; it’s a joy to behold. The music, on the other hand, was not so dialed in. It was… eclectic. Ranging from techno to Johnny Cash to Coolio, and almost everything a remix version, the music was a little obnoxious at times. This is the 2nd of our two complaints(the first one being the asparagus ends), neither of which seriously detract from the magnificence of the entire night! Do yourself a favour; pick a special night and treat yourself. It’s so worth it.

Another one of those surprises from my husband. Got a call late. Get ready we are going out. Where? just be ready when I get home he said, some of you ladies know what I am talking about and guys you know what we mean. I thought ok! he is not proposing again but a new ring will be nice lol… this one is already 14 years old but I am still loving it, let say it still fits. Ok! for this one I had to put on my best piece. Off we go and it is getting late Calgary is cold most places are closed. Here we are Montanas last call for dinner order. I have to say I was very impressed with the service. At the end of the day like this everyone want to go home, but the waitress was patient and nice. I would recommend… There are different location but this was Sarcee Trail location. I would go back there again.

Beautiful décor, great place to have an intimate evening out. The food was great, the service was… well… I guess the word would be «inexperienced». So to start, the food was awesome. The steaks were cooked perfectly, I tried the Wagyu steak, and love that it’s sourced locally and easily identifiable. The menu is well put together with your usual steakhouse options. Most of my dining mates had the prime rib special, since it was a Sunday. Great deal for $ 43 to have a soup/salad to start, prime rib with sides, and dessert. Surprisingly, I found the horseradish to be extremely fresh and had a lot of bite. Most people couldn’t handle large doses, and we are a family of spice eaters(all have ghost chilies on hand!). So perhaps they’ve made that change since Nathaniel’s review, or maybe we just went on a good day for horseradish. I love their use of truffle oil in many of their dishes, as well. The steak was really«melt in your mouth». The crème brûlée at the end was a disappointment to finish the meal. Cold throughout(even the flamed part of it was cold) and way too deep of a dish, it was more like eating pudding. That was the only food disappointment though, the rest was great. They have some twists on a normal steak house. The good: the truffle popcorn you start with. Lightly seasoned with a great hint of truffle oil, it’s a great thing to get your appetite going. The bad: they let you choose your own steak knife. All of the knives are exactly the same, it’s just a different colour. I appreciate the idea, but if they are all exactly the same it just seems a little gimmicky. Great quality knives, though. Now the service. For such a high quality steak house, it is surprising how inexperienced the servers were. And not in the endearing way, but in the awkward questions, fumbling, dishes crashing(twice during our meal), lack of food knowledge way. The interior and bathrooms were beautifully designed. Prices were on the high side, which I think it can get away with once it’s established itself as a fine dining steak house, but with the service, I think it still has a little ways to go if its to get to a point where it can fairly charge those prices.

Close to good. Ribeye was cooked properly to request albeit a bit over than under but I did ask for that. The horseradish merlot sauce was very mild, was expecting more bite. The candied brussel sprouts were great, a faint memory of muse that used to be before the falling out of the ownership and it turning into modern steak. The cut itself was ok. The price is still expensive for kensington keeping locals away. 70 $ not including tip for a steak, a pop, some brussel sprouts, a sauce and a cinnemon bun for desert. When I was there it was mostly businessmen and out of towners. Great place for a steak, they just need to tone it back to the neighboirhood and not so much on the fine dining ala carte side. Best streakhouse in Calgary so far from Keg to chop to montana to cattle baron to charcut to etc etc… xept my smokehouse steak… nothing can beat me in this city… dont touch the popcorn offered… youll regret it
