Not surprised they can’t compete with the 6 or so that are within 5 min. drive of this one. Probably the least sushi-like décor, felt like a Chinese one lol. Because I heard Mandarin here, that’s why. I can’t remembered what I order here last summer, but believe me, not worth going to. If you’re in a pinch, maybe, but like I said, you can walk out blindfolded and you’ll bump into another sushi place.

Shocked to find the previous owner has sold the business sometime late summer of 2014. Boooo. Its just not the same, although it looks similar. Same layout, same fish tank, kids toy box at the back, but thats about it. Menu has changed and the food is just not the same. We’ve been going there for over 12 years and unfortunately this will be the last visit. We’ll miss you Akira.

Ordered some bento boxes for take out. We ordered a chicken teriyaki box, a beef teriyaki box and a tofu teriyaki box. The boxes were part of their daily specials. The staff who answered the phone call had trouble understanding what the order was and was eager to hang up the phone after each item was listed. English was obviously her second language, but I do not think a «beef teriyaki bento box for pick up» is that hard to understand. She should have also asked if there was anything else we wanted to make sure the order was complete. Food was ready for pick up when we arrived and was nicely organized in a cardboard box for easy carrying. They accept credit card payment which is a convenient feature. The server did not greet me or thank me for the order. Service was minimal. She handed me the bill and I gave her my credit card. No thank you or see you again attempt. The restaurant only had one seated customer and it would have been great if she tried a bit harder to impress customers as there are so many sushi restaurants on that block of Hastings alone. I had the beef teriyaki box for $ 8.95. The value is there and I was too full to finish my meal. This is a good standard bento box. Food quality was decent and what I expect from an average sushi restaurant.

Akira is close to a few places i travel to on a weekly basis so its my weekly stop for sushi. Akira sushi is reasonable price and tastes decent. It is pretty good overall. Now its NOTHING special but 9.95 for a bento box, you cant go wrong

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Akira Sushi has a lot of things to work on. When I arrived at 8pm on a Friday night, this restaurant was empty. Just as my group and I were in the middle of deciding what to order, we were asked by staff to make up our minds quickly, but to take our time to eat once our food arrived. Rude, n’est pas? I shared an Ogo Pogo, Alaska and Dynamite Roll with my partner in crime. The food was mediocre at best. The only flavours out of anything I tasted was the sauce from the eel(which comes with the eel when you buy it from a local speciality foods store) and soy sauce. However, what turned us off the most was our tuna sashimi. When it was served to us, we were ordered not to eat it right away and to allow it to warm up. That says a lot. Not only were we served frozen and old sushi, the staff were completely content with the quality of food they serve their guests. The entire time I found it unacceptable, naturally. We waited about ten minutes, but the tuna was still frozen. Seeing how the staff were so eager to close shop, it didn’t leave us with too many options. The rest of my appetite was lost immediately after the tuna incident at which point I left the rest of my food untouched. «Want us to pack those up for you?» No thank you. If I can list a few things that I detest most when I’m dining out, they are as follows(in no particular order): — Staff talking loudly in front of patrons. — Staff dressed in sloppy attire. — Staff staring at you from the kitchen behind an ajar curtain. — Leftover food(possibly a staff member’s lunch/dinner) left in plain sight of diners. — Being forced to order, eat, and/or leave. — To be served old, frozen or canned food. — Lack of cleanliness in and around where I dine. I’m positive there are more to list, but these are the few I encountered at Akira Sushi. It’s a shame because I’m all for helping local businesses, but I also expect there to be some form of merit involved. The staff were friendly and they refilled our teas frequently, but it takes more than just a smile to earn those stars. Hopefully the next time I visit, there will be an improvement with my dining experience.

I showed up here about 20 minutes before it closed and all I wanted was a few decent rolls. You know, the basics. One tuna roll, one salmon roll and one avocado roll. Not only did it take a long time for them to make, but the ingredients were just lame. They had obviously abandoned serving quality food by 9 o’clock and just gave me whatever crap was leftover. If you are going to go here, I would imagine going in the afternoon or early evening would yield fresher results.

Great food, good pricing, good staff. Been going here for 7 years with boyfriend. Super quick service. Dinner combos are $ 10.95 and you get a LOT of food. Enough to even share.

This is my go-to place for Japanese cuisine because the prices are very resonable. The place is not fancy and can be a bit noisy at times(because it’s popular with families that has small children). The food is good, sushi is well presented. My favorite menu item is the Assorted Tempura. They do a great job on the BC Rolls and sashimi as well.
