Amazing food and atmosphere. Make sure you sit upstairs for extra intimacy. If you’re in Ipanema this place is a must.

It’s a very nice, cozy restaurant. We arrived at 8pm, without a reservation and luckily got a table immediately. When we left(2 hrs later) the waiting time was around 1hr. Its a famous spot for locals too. The food is great. The ingredients are organic and you can taste its freshness. We tried the steak, octopus and fettuccine. No regrets. The appetizers, drinks and desserts were awesome too. Try the mojitos! The staff is multilingual so we felt like home with our Spanish speaking mesero from Argentina. The prices are good. We paid $ 450 reales($ 130USD approximately) for a three course meal and drinks for three. Thumbs up for Zazá. Excellent choice!

I’ve been back several times since my first review, and the last two times were better than the first. Service is still a bit slow, but the food makes up for it. I had the curry chicken again and found that you can increase the level of heat — just request it spicier, they should ask how spicy you want it. Once I got it so hot I was sweating — my kind of spicy! The other menu items are good, my dad had the steak and it was excellent. Try sitting upstairs if possible. Downstairs is just like a regular restaurant, and it gets cramped and busy. Upstairs has a completely different vibe — relaxed, calm, tranquil. And you get the added benefit of taking off your shoes and sitting at low tables, which adds charm and the feeling that you’re somewhere unique.

Such a great find. We couldn’t get a reservation for my birthday so went over at 6:45 to add our name to the waiting list when they opened at 7:30. We had a table by 7:40. The décor is colorful and eclectic and the menu is full of delicious options. Check out the second floor where you can dine with no shoes and be sure to read the quotes in the bathroom. I had the northeast fish special and hubby had steak. We also had a few cocktails and bottled water. I can’t even describe how great the meal tasted. We decided to go back for our anniversary dinner and sit on the second floor. It’s not expensive in my opinion. The total bill was approximately $ 90 usd.

Overrated and tries too hard. Apparently a yuppie and tourist favorite, expect a significant wait to be seated. I can’t tell if the interior design is quirky or pretentious. The food, much like the décor, seems to be a haphazard combination of flavors without much thought to coherence. For the amount I’m forking over, I’d expect the food to be more than just ok. Tip for the ladies, your pedicure game better be on point as the upstairs area is shoe-free.

Can’t believe this place was our first dinner in Brazil a year ago. We’ve come full circle and decided to stop by for some drinks after partying with the Ipanema Bloco for the last few hours. Of course everyone had similar ideas– a restroom break, some chairs to sit on, more drinks, some food. They had their crowd control gates and a guard to determine if you were worth enough to come in. The hostess determined if we were potential customers and decided to let us wait inside the gate until a seat opened up. We were lucky and the first tall bar table in the front opened up shortly and we got a perfect view of the Bloco craziness and a table for four(though tight). We tried their drinks, my favorite being the shangri-la, a vodka based drink with strawberry, cranberry, mint, lime and with a spicy chocolate rim for R$ 29. The Zaza fresca, a vanilla vodka with coconut water was quite refreshing and the standard caipirinha, wasn’t as sweet as the standard Brazilian one usually is. The Bellini with peach purée was delicious although light. If you’re alcohol-ed out or need a break they have a good selection of non-alcoholic drinks like The Zaza soft, which is a delicious combination of lichii, basil and tonic water at a slightly cheaper price of R$ 15. Although we just came for drinks this time, we did receive excellent service and managed to get a table in the middle of carnaval blocos. They were doing an excellent job of weeding out the overly inebriated to keep the inside environment safe and comfortable and got people the tables and seating they needed despite the crowds.

I get it that it’s in Leblon and they mainly serve the Brazilian mega-rich. But a good place should also be known for its service and friendliness, not just ambiance and quality of food. Our experience was that we wanted to share a meal but the waiter tried to sell us the most expensive one and kept saying one portion wouldn’t be enough for two. Then he saw that we set our mind on a particular dish to share, and he started ignoring us or being straight up rude. I think he expects everyone in Leblon to just be throwing money around and showing off. Wasn’t the case for us. He did bring the food eventually, and it was delicious; most importantly, it was more than enough for the two of us, with all that rice and what not. Maybe we just weren’t lucky with the guy but that was our experience and we won’t be coming back there again next time we’re in Rio. Plenty of other great places to try!

They lost out reservation which we made by phone from USA. Upon arriving the hostess was INCREDIBLYRUDE and did nothing to accommodate us initially and kept saying it wasn’t possible we made a reservation by phone. Finally gave us a table after we were just stranded on the sidewalk for about 10 minutes.(After they said they had no tables) Food — the octopus was delicious. The cod was over salted. Ambiance was not the best /probably you can get a better experience somewhere else in rio for the price.

I don’t know why it’s so expensive here in a first place, compared to other good restaurants around. The interior design is nice, kind of Bo-bo, then I guess it affects the prices. The food names are kind of fancy with«moroccan» and«balsamic» words on the menu, so it must affect prices as well(I’d have prefered if it affected the taste in a good way). But I don’t really care about those things… The food was OK, but for this price(like twice higher than anywhere else), I shouldn’t be hungry once my plate is empty. And honestly, it was just OK, not good, for 74 $r a dish… The service wasn’t good ATALL. We(and the table on our right) waited way too long for what we ordered, and the waiters made mistakes on what we ordered. The table on the left was a party of 4, they were noisy as hell, almost drunk, and nobody from the restaurant’s employees said a word, because they were ordering refills every 5min(money was dropping). Even our waiter had difficulties to hear us(certainly why he made mistakes). We left as fast as we could, and won’t come back again. It’s a crowded expensive touristy restaurant. Not a good place to have a great culinary experience, people come here to be seen and show they can pay for expensive mediocre dishes. PS: the only fast thing in the service is that guy who comes and puts mineral water in your glass without asking if you want some, to add this on the check. I had to stop him very fast to avoid it. I discovered that I could have been an excellent Ninja here. I asked him a Coca Cola instead. He came back as fast as the wind and filled my glass with water again. I looked at him, and said again I’d like a Coca Cola… He said«sim, agua com gaz»… I was like… Listen carefully, or if you can’t, read on my leaps: «I would like a Coca Cola please. Queria um Coca Cola por favor.» The guy said«aaaaaaah Coca Cola», he took the open bottle of water and my glass back, in a way that was supposed to show that he was upset(sorry, I should have drunk what I didn’t order to make your night better… And pay for it…) and he NEVERCAMEBACKWITHMYCOCACOLA. Loved the experience at zaza…

Came here based on others reviews! absolutely loved the cosy upstairs with the no shoes off policy. I’m pretty sure all dining experiences should be like this… but after a long day of being a tourist this was the perfect low key place to grab some food and drinks. I had the beet tortilini — absolutely delicious. The smoked octopus samosas were also melt in your mouth good. To drink I had the zefiro… looks like a green detox juice but is a very fresh cocktail! Definitely a great spot to check out in town.

Zaza Bistro is popular with tourists but the food speaks for itself. The ambiance is eccentric yet cozy. They have a few seating options including an outdoor patio and a second floor where you have to take your shoes off(if that’s your type of thing). Making a reservation is very straightforward and can be done online. If you’re staying in Ipanema, this spot is very easy to get to by foot. The service was good. The drinks were strong. They have a variety of different capirinhas and caipivodkas as well as some Brazilian beers. As for the food, we shared the Moroccan Pastilla(finger food) which was incredibly savory; nicely added touch of Brazilian nuts and served with fresh mint yogurt. The Zaza Bistro classics, or the mains were quite sizable. The organic chicken in balsamic reduction served on quinoa was the epitome of comfort food. The marinated fresh tuna came with wassabi mashed potatoes – very creative. We ended our meal with an excellent banana-carpaccio brulee.

Zaza is by far my favorite Ipanema restaurant. It’s unique vibe transports you perhaps not to Morocco as their description claims, but maybe Eastern Europe. The food was top notch — ordered the sampler as an appetizer and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of new combinations and flavors I experienced. For the entrée I had the tuna which was cooked perfectly. Pros — ambiance, uniqueness of the menu Cons — no public wifi

The food and drinks here tonight were amazing! The American couple sitting right next to us and fighting most of the night, not so much so. I can’t hold this against zaza though as their distance between tables is par for the course. Still, it is fairly off putting to here ‘l could throw something at you” or «you’re feeling the way you are because you’ve never lost», and on and on and on… Anyways, I appreciated their selection of local craft beers and enjoyed the eisenbahn strong ale. My wife had the coconut cocktail, which was quite good. After a drink, we mostly talked in Spanish for the duration of our time at zaza about the obnoxious couple next to us and actually had quite a good time. We started with the boiled octopus and guacamole appetizer, which was delicious. For the main course I had the grouper and she had the seafood pasta. Everything was cooked well and seasoned wonderfully, with a tropical flair. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Rio… Unless of course you plan on bringing your petty apartment hunting argument to dinner, in which case you should stay home.

This restaurant has a nice eclectic atmosphere which makes you feel as if you’re in a unique café. The tables are a bit too close to each other making you feel like you’re in your neighbor’s convo but overall a comfortable aura. We ordered the sampler appetizer which included two prices of their most popular starters. Each one was delicious paired with their sauce. For entrees we ordered the white fish special & the chicken with coconut milk, bananas & cashews(spicy chicken curry). It was a delicious meal which combined Asian, Indian, & Brazilian influences. It was almost difficult to stop eating. The white fish on the other hand was paired with a thick pumpkin purée which should have stolen the show when mixed with the fish BUT the fish prepared for us had an overpowering ocean taste. The fish was below average. This dish was the reason why I couldn’t give this restaurant a 5 star review. Overall it was a great experience to try something different in an unfamiliar country and will deff come back to get the chicken curry again.

Absolutely must try! The cutest place with amazing food. I had the northest red fish from the chefs suggestions and it did not disappoint. «Fish grilled with mush palm and tomato, coconut milk, cilantro sagu, tapioca biju and brazilian nuts». I dont know what sagu or biju or but damn give me more. The tapioca were like little bobas which added great texture to the dish, surprisingly! The fish reminded me of something from a thai restaurant due to the coconut milk, and the tomato purée was a perfect addition to the creaminess of the sauce. The entire plate was beautiful too. My friends had the wallpaper drink which was full of passion fruit flavor with a little kick at the end. It definitely tasted better than it looked. Make sure to go to the bathroom, I loved the writing on the walls. The upstairs room is worth checking out too, its carpeted and people sit on cushions. Would be a great date place!

If you spend the day at Ipanema Beach, this café is a great place to grab some creative cocktails and delicious vegetarian food options. They serve meat, but there are plenty of veggie items using the freshest ingredients. Great outdoor patio and a nice bar downstairs. When you go up a spiral staircase to the second floor, you will pass a beautiful stained glass window and a rack for your shoes before you proceed to a small, low table and sit on floor cushions. There’s a fountain out front for washing the sand off your feet, and I assume you just walk in barefoot and check your shoes upstairs. It’s the height of casual beach chic, very inviting.

Easily our favorite(our entire group) dining experience in Rio. The restaurant is warm and inviting with fun eclectic décor — mix of Anthropologie meets Warhol. Staff spoke English and was very friendly. Menus come in English so easy to order. Ceviche starter was outstanding. Chicken curry was delicious. The rest of the group loved their shrimp with lemon risotto, tuna and soup. Really enjoyed all of the desserts — we got the one with multiple selections in a smaller portion. Great route to go. HIGHYLRECOMMEND.

Well, I landed in Rio de Janeiro, first time there, and wasn’t totally sure where to go eat. I was hungry after a long commute but didn’t want to settle for just anything. Brazil has a number of traditional dishes, mainly focused on meat, cheese and bread items, with the addition of fresh fruits and juices. However, I was able to find a number of places that really changed my mind about that, and one of them was Zazá Bistrô Tropical in Ipanema. Drawn in by the whimsical twinkle lights strewn about the dining patio, the blue painted restaurant caught my eye. I know, don’t judge a book by it’s cover. But whatever, the place looked cool, so, I checked out the menu and it seemed as lovely as the aesthetic. To start, I ordered The Wallpaper(cachaca with passion fruit, sugar, vanilla bean and pepper). This drink was so amazing, I actually didn’t even care if the food was any good. There are different dimensions to this drink, making it really unique. You first get a sweetness from the passion fruit, which almost then turns into a sort of cotton candy flavor. Then, there’s a really nice heat that follows, which is especially nice since they really don’t use spicy ingredients in their cooking in Brazil. Then, I had their Organic Salad Leaves(with stewed vegetables, gorgonzola, green apple and hazelnuts). This was such a delightful salad, it was fresh, had great textures and a nice, light citrusy flavor from the dressing. There’s just something magical about the combination of a tart apple, the bite of gorgonzola cheese, and the sweet nuttiness and crunch of hazelnuts.

Some of the best food I’ve had in Rio… or just about anywhere. Gracious servers, nice patio with windowbox herb garden, and you can hang out on cushioned benches next to the tree in front with your caipirinha while waiting for your table. I’ve eaten at Zaza about 4 or 5 times since 2007. During my latest Rio visit, for a week in early Feb, I ended up there twice. Favorite starter is currently the samosa, and favorite dish is currently the filet de bacalhao(cod filet, tender, succulent, sweet, I could go on…). The«bananas carpaccio» desert(uploading pic shortly) was spectacular. I see some reviews say it’s pricey but it’s certainly less than what you’d pay for in the US for something even halfway as good. Plan about US$ 80 – 100 for two including drinks and said desert…

Fancy some fancy lunch?
