Café de l’Europe

Nice old café in a great location. But:
1. They allow to smoke indoors, which is ridiculous.
2. They have no soy milk.
3. Two cups of tea cost € 10.
4. Not for me…

Had the club sandwich, chicken salad and the gnocci with two mojitos and it was all amazing. Can’t understand the low star rating! Staff were friendly and it was very cosy upstairs. I would recommend it in a Sunday when everything else is closed!

We actually ended up eating here twice on our recent stay to Vienna. A local friend of ours picked it for a Friday night dinner and made reservations for a window booth upstairs. The service was rather slow on that busy Friday night, I think they need more waitstaff, but the food made up for it for sure! Then we went again for a Sunday brunch, late around 1pm and the service was better because it was slow. A fresh homemade omelet and tea were a nice change from cold cuts for breakfast everyday. I am looking forward to returning here again in the summer to eat on the terrace outside and will also be back in Vienna at Christmas and hope to stop here again.

Ganz nett zum Sitzen im Sommer, die Wassersprüher kühlen angenehm. Aber leider ist der Gastgarten extrem eng gestuhlt.
Der Eiskaffee ist in Ordnung, aber nicht herausragend.
Eine Unsitte, die sich in der Wiener Gastronomie breit macht, wird auch hier praktiziert: Geld für Leitungswasser abzuzwacken. 0,5L kosten 80 Cent, 0,2L kosten 50 Cent. Finde ich akzeptabel, wenn es das Einzige ist, was ich bestelle. Wenn ich ohnehin ordentlich Geld liegen lasse, dann muss das einfach mit dabei sein.

Wanted to add a review because it seems that the average rating is lower than it should be. It should be at least a 3.5 star average which I would give if I could.
So why a 4 instead of a 3 from me? First let’s accept that this restaurant is in the middle of Vienna’s biggest tourist attraction so of course their prices are going to be inflated and of course they are going to target the biggest, most readily available audience — tourists. That said, there are a number of things that make this restaurant both convenient and enjoyable.
— Location: located in the middle of the square and easy to access when you’ve been walking most of the day and you are with someone who is hungry and starting to get grumpy.
— Outdoor seating: great for people watching as well as sparking conversation with others around you. I overheard an older gentleman who identified himself as from Wien happily chatting with a couple that said they were from Taiwan. He then tried to engage me in conversation but I unfortunately do not understand much German beyond the basics.
— The menu: nearly every item in the menu has a photo of it (along with a description), making it very easy to decide what you want to order. Vegetarian options are also clearly labeled so anyone with those diet restrictions can quickly assess the items that are available to them.
— The food was pretty good. We had the Wiener schnitzel and the zucchini risotto. Nothing mind blowing, but decent.
— Dessert: there is a huge selection of dessert. There is one page on the menu that is pretty unique and clever in that it offers desserts (mostly ice cream) in the form of typical savory Italian dishes such as spaghetti carbonara (ice cream that looks like pasta with hazel nuts and syrup) or margherita pizza (some sort of concoction with banana pieces that look like the «cheese» and whipped cream as the base of the «pizza»). We had the spaghetti carbonara which was a bit sweet for me so I then went with a cappuccino without sugar to balance it out (more ice cream for him!).
— Service was as expected, nothing spectacular but nothing egregious. Our order was accidentally brought to the table next to us but they quickly fixed it for the other table, taking our dishes back while they figured out the mistake. When they brought out our order, the dishes were still warm.
— Heat lamps outside as the sun set and temperatures dropped, keeping the area comfortable.
Overall a pleasant experience. And we got to see the colors change across the steeple of Stephansdom as the sun set.

Legendär für Stehcafé. Unten natürlich.
Der Imagewandel zum Ialiener ist nach wie vor irritierend, dennoch der Kaffee is guat!
Manchmal stehen übriggebliebene Schickimickis herum und entlocken mir einen Schmunzler ;)
Schnelles Service. Gut. Perfekt für einen Zwischenstop.

We had dinner here one night and then came back for coffee the next morning.
For dinner, my wife had a salad with prawns, and I had bacon-​wrapped goat cheese over salad. My salad was excellent and different from anything I’ve experienced back home in the U.S. My wife thought her salad was great as well, though she would have preferred steak to prawns. The server was helpful, and he accepted payment by credit card.
Our coffees the next morning were great. I was happy the café had unsweetened whipped cream (Schlagobers) for my coffee. The serving of Schlagobers was generous, almost as much as the actual coffee. This time, however, the server told us he would not accept a credit card.

Café de l’Europe liegt direkt vor dem Ausgang der U3 Stephansplatz. Ganz zentral, kann man den Ausblick vom 1. Stock auf den Graben genießen wahrend man Kaffee trinkt.
Man kann schon den Geruch der Zigarretten in der Luft riechen bevor man hinein tritt. Der EG ist reserviert für die Raucher & der Geruch folgt bis in den 1. Stock, wobei die beiden Bereiche mit eine Glastüre getrennt sind.
Unwahrscheinlich, dass dieses Café eines meiner Lieblingskaffeehäuser wird. Da die Preise teurer sind als in der Filiale Café Casteletto (das zu Fuß nur 15 mins weg ist) & die typisch-​wienerische Bedienung auch nicht so freundlich ist.

We had dinner here tonight and liked it very much. You enter off the street into the café, where smoking is allowed. To reach the restaurant, which is nonsmoking, you must climb a flight of stairs. We were greeted and directed upstairs. The upstairs windows have fairy lights in them, which makes for a pretty sight. From both the café and the restaurant you have a view of the street scene, although it was pretty quiet on a Sunday night. All the window tables were filled when we went upstairs, but we found a two top one row in that gave us a good view.
The menus are on the tables in interesting holders made of split kombocha bottles. Their selection is extensive, from breakfast fare to soups and salads, a variety of mains and a broad, indulgent and inventive selection of deserts. The beverages range from coffees, teas and chocolates to beer, wines and cocktails. We’d had a late lunch, so we wanted a light dinner. We both chose a prawn salad, both ordered water and I unaccountably ordered a green tea rather than the pinot grigio I had been contemplating and Alan ordered a wheat beer since the only dark beer they had was Guinness, which he dislikes.
The salads were excellent, full of fresh lettuces, cut up bell pepper of all colors, some ripe avocado, tomato wedges, cucumber slices and a profusion of large, nicely seasoned and cooked prawns w/​a well balanced vinaigrette. Cruets of olive oil and vinegar and salt and pepper grinders were delivered to the table, although the dressing needed no augmentation in our opinion. It was a most satisfying dinner, light, yet filling. Alan liked his beer and I liked my tea. In contrast to all the plastic water bottles in Istanbul, all the bottled water we’ve had here has been in glass bottles. It was an excellent choice of restaurants for what we wanted tonight and we were pleased.

Zentral und direkt am Graben gelegen genieße ich oft die vorbeigehenden hektischen Touristen bei einem guten Espresso und bei noch besserem Eis.
Das Café ist nicht nur wegen der Lage, eines meiner Lieblingscafes, sondern sie machen auch unvorstellbar gutes und frisches Eis!
Vor allem Fiori di latte gibt es hier!!! Mit dem Sitzplatz sieht es eher schlecht aus, man muss echt Glück haben, denn es ist immer gesteckt voll– auch bei schlechtem Wetter.
Das Personal ist freundlich, aber gestresst. So muss man schon etwas länger auf seine Bestellung warten– das macht aber nichts, denn während dessen kann man ja seinen Blick über die «unendlichen Weiten» des Stephansplatzes schweifen lassen.

Der wohl einzige Grund, weshalb ich das Café de l’Europe mag (warum das Café so hochtrabend heißt, weiss ich bis heute nicht) ist einfach seine zentrale Lage und die unglaublich gute Möglichkeit von hier aus dem ganzen Treiben am Graben zu folgen. Allerdings auch nur im Sommer, denn im Winter wird es natürlich zu kalt, um sich draussen hin zu setzen, auch wenn bis zum Herbst Heizstrahler draussen stehen, die das Sitzen angenehmer gestalten sollen.
Warum es mich aber trotzdem nicht umhaut? Erstens dauert es im allgemeinen recht lange, bis überhaupt ein Kellner auf einen aufmerksam wird. Dann bekommt man etwas, was nicht auf der Karte steht, zum Beispiel arschkalte Himbeeren statt warmen, die aus der «Heißen Liebe», wie es in der Karte steht, eher einen kalten Alptraum machen.
Schade, bei den vielen Einnahmen, die das Café täglich durch die vielen Touristen macht, könnte es sich eigentlich besser präsentieren.

Wahrscheinlich die erste Anlaufstelle für viele Touristen ist das Café de l’Europe, direkt ums Eck des Stephansdoms. Sicher man sitzt ganz nett im Sommer, unter Sonnenschirmen, mit Blick auf die vielen vorbeiziehenden Touris und die Straßenkünstler.
Aber die preise und der Service sind horrend! Erst muss man ewig warten bis ein kellner aufkreuzt, obwohl der einfach auf der Seite steht und ratscht. Der Cappuccino ist winzig und dann am Ende der Schock, 10 Euro für ein kleines Bier und einen Mini-​Cappuccino — sind nun einmal viel zu viel! Nicht empfehlbar, da es eine reine Touristenfalle ist. Vielleicht für ein Leitungswasser, aber vermutlich würde selbst das etwas kosten!

Lange wartezeiten, haare im getränk und trotzdem höhere preisklasse — 2 sterne.
Sehr viele touristen aber mit dem muss man am stephansplatz rechnen.

Unsereins geht ja ins Europa, und nicht ins Europe. Die Namen können da manchmal schon für Verwirrungen sorgen und zu Verwechslungen führen. Nämlich, wenn ich bei den Worten einer Freundin «gemma ins Europe» wieder mal annehme, dass sie das Europa unweit der Mariahilfer Straße meint. Ich bin also zum besagten Treffpunkt am vermeintlich richtigen Ort, komme aber dann drauf, dass sie nicht kommt. Im Zeitalter des Handys kein Problem, schnell ist der Irrtum aufgedeckt. Also geh ich ins Europe, obwohl mir das ja nicht so liegt. Ein touristisches Café. Immer voll, immer was los, immer Preise, die’s in sich haben. Mehr oder weniger ein Szene-​Lokal, wo sich vor allem unter tags das meiste abspielt. Dort trinke ich meinen allerersten Aperol-​Spritzer und fühle mich nach dem zweiten dann schon ganz wohl in dieser Gesellschaft — aber eben nur mit Alkohol.

Eines der zentralsten Kaffeehäuser in Wien ist das Café de l’Europe. Es liegt direkt am Graben im 1. Bezirk und ist nur wenige Schritte vom Stephansdom entfernt.
Ich bevorzuge einen gemütlichen Fensterplatz im ersten Stock, von dort aus hat man eine schöné Aussicht auf den Graben und kann die gestressten Leute beim Shoppen beobachten.
Sicherlich ist es auch praktisch, einen Besuch im Café de l’Europe mit einer Shoppingtour auf der Kärntnerstraße zu verbinden — ein netter Ausklang für eine anstrengende Tour.
Die Preise im Café de l’Europe sind überteuert, was mit großer Sicherheit auf die gute Lage mitten in der Innenstadt zurückzuführen ist, die Qualität der angebotenen Produkte ist jedoch gut, auch das Eis kann ich wärmstens empfehlen.
Besonders mag ich das Café im Winter, wenn es draußen dunkel ist und man die schönen Beleuchtungen am Graben sehen kann — dann wird es im Café Europe richtig gemütlich und man kann die Abendstunden schön mit heißer Schokolade, Kaffee oder einen warmen Tee ausklingen lassen.

Direkt am Spephansdom nett zum draussen sitzen und Leute gucken, aber ansonsten ein reines Touri-​Restaurant mit schlechtem Preis-​Leistungs-​Verhältnis für Speisen und Getränke.
Doe Speisenauswahl ist recht groß, unser Cesar Salat und die Sandwiches waren nicht allzu frisch.
Zum sitzen und gucken ok, essen würde ich dort nicht mehr.

— ein typischer Touristen-​Treff, für den Apfelsaft mit Leitungswasser über 5 Euro bezahlt!!! Die Kellnerin hat sich dafür entschuldigt. Hier wird man mich nicht mehr antreffen.

Der Kaffee mundet dort vorzüglich, selbst ein Steh-​Espresso ist ein Gedicht. Die Bohnen können auch gekauft werden, für alle, die sich das Erlebnis zuhause gönnen wollen.

Leider: kein Nichtraucherbereich, Bedienung eher matt und unfreundlich.

Das Café de l Europe geht gar nicht. Auf zwei Stockwerken aufgeteilt und kriegen es nicht hin, einen Nichtraucherbereich einzurichten. Im oberen Stock sind zwei Tische (sic!) für Nichtraucher. Absolut daneben!

Ein Altwiener Café mit gemütlicher Atmosphäre. Es gibt auch einen Stock, falls wer im Parterre kein Plätzchen finden sollte. Für Touristen zu empfehlen, die ein wenig urige Wiener Atmosphäre schnuppern wollen. Heiße Schokolade mundet vorzüglich.
Eher gehobene Preisklasse, aber Stammgast zu sein ist ja nicht zwingend
