Should you visit Reverse Garbage expecting anything more than odds and ends of well, «garbage» then your visit here will be wasted. Enter this garage come retail store with an open mind set for discovery amongst the offcuts of foam pieces, old retail fitouts, scrap wood, fabric and even personal shopping carts without wheels for $ 2 and you just might be in luck. They always say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and never has it been more true than here in the back streets of Woolloongabba. I visited Reverse Garbage out of perverse curiosity and a colleague had mentioned finding old laminex colour match tags as the perfect ‘drink ticket’ for events. At 20c a bag — it was a bargin. The limit is your imagination. While a home DIY’er would find a few things here, I think where it really comes into its own would be for a uni student studying visual art or the career Etsy seller. Either way when you’re feeling a little bit of the«Tara Dennis» in you coming out, let her rip at Reverse Garbage. You never know what you’ll find and reuse to create something wonderful.

Full of bits of wood, mannequins, plastic, rope, fabric and thousands of other bits and bobs that were going to be thrown out by various industrial places. In this way, they are stopping waste and allowing things to have a second chance at life. They are always getting new things in and the best way to hear about their latest bargain is to keep an eye on their facebook page. They are a not-for-profit organisation that goes to schools to do workshops and have a small shop that sells upcycled handmade goodies from local craftspeople. If you love craft and DIY(or you’re renovating your house), this is the place for you. Everything is priced reasonably. I have used some of their things for my own crafting projects. Perhaps the only problem is their location; they can be a bit hard to get to. I catch the bus and jump off at the P.A. Hospital. From there it’s about a 15 minute walk.

If you like all things crafty and DIY, Reverse Garbage is pretty much your dream shop. This store sells bits of garbage that can be bought for as cheap as chips and turned into whatever your creativity allows you to. The stock at Reverse Garbage changes fairly often as they often get new donations. You can expect to see anything as random as shoe soles and rubber connectors. When I was in High School, we were lucky enough to have the owner of the store come in and show us the things she had made with garbage. She had found ways to create jewellery and more practical things like carry-bags all out of scraps. Reverse Garbage is a very unique store. If creating unique items out of recycled scraps seems like something you could dabble in, then I highly recommend you check out this store.

Reverse Garbage is a genius concept and a haven for teachers, arts and crafters, builders, and visual artists. I came here when I was doing art subjects at university and I picked up some gems: old bathroom floor tiles, doorknobs, a bulk supply of buttons, some fragments of balsa wood, and metres of tubing. The prices were reasonable and the materials were in very good condition. That said, the types of materials on offer are constantly changing depending on what discards Reverse Garbage receives from businesses. So it’s worth coming here with an open mind and letting your creativity take over. If you’re strapped for cash around christmas time and crafty at heart, I’d recommend coming here to pick up some materials to make something special for loved ones.

Whoever created Reverse Garbage is a genius and should be given a medal for helping to solve the world’s waste problems. Don’t get me started on my overconsumption rant! Reverse Garbage is a not-for-profit that accepts donations of industrial scraps or pays a small fee for them, organises them in a way that is consumer-friendly and sells them, saving«rubbish» from going into landfill. As a sewer, I love their fabric scraps. Most of it’s off-cuts of pretty odd shapes but there are some small rolls of fabric too. Selling truly random things like bottle caps, brochures, long tubes of mesh-like fabric – things that would otherwise be considered junk – this is a great place for creative souls, kindergarten teachers in search of craft material and anyone who wants to look first for second-hand materials before buying something new and contributing to the cycle of consumption! Uh-oh, I feel that rant coming on again…

As it’s name suggests, nothing is thought of as garbage in this recycled material superstore. Here you will find everything from bottle caps and bits of oddly shaped plastic to rolls of fabric and strange foil pipes that look like they came out of a bad sci-fi movie. It’s a great place for anyone crafty to find their next masterpiece, as evidenced by the art gallery and gift shop section of the store dedicated to the weird and wonderful things various Brisbane artisans have created out of ‘recycled garbage.’ On display are such things as cute earings and other jewellery items made of random bits and pieces that you can probably find around the store, fascinating art works and plenty more weird and wonderful things. It’s also a fantastic place to find materials for young artists in the making. If you’re a teacher, parent or anyone who works with children, they will absolutely love a baggie full of stuff from here to explore, experiment and create with. For just a few dollars(everything is seriously CHEAP) you can entertain the kids for hours!
