Well, all I can say that this is another one of those rather ordinary hotels down near Kings Cross. I’ve been here a couple of times and have never really been all that impressed with the place. Actually, it is more like one of those pubs that you pretty much expect to be full of backpackers, though that does depend on the time of day(or night). When I came here recently it was pretty empty, though it has been packed at other times. They do have a TV, which meant I could watch the dying stages of a rather close football match, and they also have live bands(though I tend not to be around at those times). I’m going to have to say that this is one of those places that I would probably give a miss.

If you’re looking for a quiet, sophisticated drink with a view over Sydney Harbour, do not — I repeat, *DONOT* go to O’Malleys. If you’re after cheap drinks at a down to earth, friendly boozer where you’re likely to make some new buddies, you’ll love it. The bar’s main clientele is the bunch from Asylum hostel, which is approx. 5 metres down the road, and the place is very much in line with the backpacker vibe. Make sure you bring ID, because Eddie and his bouncer WILL scan it every time you go into the venue. With AUS $ 8 jugs of snakebite on Sundays, karaōke on Mondays etc, this does feel very much like an Australian version of a student bar(great if that’s what you’re looking for). On the Sunday that I visited, they had a live musician too, which was great for dancing into the wee hours. Go to O’Malleys with high expectations and you’ll be disappointed. Go looking for a laugh, new friends and cheap drink and you’ll love it.

O’Malley’s and I have some history together. A bunch of pals and I were staying across the street and the moment I saw O’Malley’s well-proportioned sign I knew I had found my home away from home. Every night we made pals with fellow tourists with varying degrees of accents but a shared love of a great time and lots of beer. If you don’t like meeting people, if you don’t like beer, if you don’t like becoming fast friends with someone over ridiculous things — like being massively in love with the same song from 1988 –then you might be better off somewhere else. I happen to love people, love beer, and people who love the same songs as I do from 1988(even if I can’t understand a single word they’re saying) — so this place suits me just fine.

We were on a quest to find Guinness in Australia, which was surprisingly in short supply. With a name like O’Malleys we were sure they would have what we were looking for, or we’d burn it to the ground. They didn’t disappoint. The Guinness was cheap too! The people here were really friendly and we had a great time.

If you couldn’t decipher it by it’s name, O’Malleys is an Irish pub on William Street just as you’re about to hit Kings Cross. If you didn’t realise by it’s name you’ll soon realise as soon as you walk in that it’s an Irish pub. So to make myself feel at home(that doesn’t really make sense because I’m not Irish) I decide to grab a Guinness. A pint of, of course. It’s pretty quite although that may be because it’s the middle of the afternoon(don’t ask me why I’m having a pint of Guinness in the middle of the arvo) but I have been past here a few times when it’s really been cranking and you can just tell everyone is having fun. It’s popular with the tourists and a good venue to watch some live sport(on the tele!) and I must admit, not a bad place to have a mid afternoon pint of Guinness!

Pub Irlandais sympathique. Pas trop cher. A noté que du Dimanche au jeudi de 11h à 22h, happy hour: $ 6/jug(environ 1,23 litres de biere) de Toohey’s. Groupe de Rock live aussi.
