The bestest little shop in the whole of Upper Sturt.(also the only shop in the whole of Upper Sturt) The Upper Sturt General Store really is the little shop that could. And the owners are well aware of it, just read any of the many hand scrawled chalkboard signs outside the store and you’re pretty well informed of the store’s well known and well deserved reputation. On top of the standard hot pies and pasties and cold soft drinks and iced coffee, Upper Sturt also boasts one of the best hot food menus around. My favourite is the Upper Sturt Burger, with a few variations on offer it’s easily my favourite Burger in the Hills. One negative of the store is the cramped front grocery area, but this is easily made up for by the spacious dining area. With views of stringybark forested valleys, this relaxed dining space rivals that of nearby pubs and restaurants. My favourite feature of the store has to be the owners; polite, friendly, professional and fast. It’s never a chore to stop at the Upper Sturt General Store.

When we moved to Upper Sturt and in the process of moving, inevitably ran out of milk, I was so pleased to find this little gem. What’s better? It’s closer to us than any other store and we pick up our parcels from these guys. The ladies who own it are ridiculously nice and they’re so passionate about their little store. Constant improvements to the store and product range make it a pleasure to head back here again and again. I even like the push to Like them on Facebook(very cute).

Last weekend. I returned to the Upper Sturt General Store for the first time in over 20 years for a bit of reminiscing. I love that it has maintained its old world charm and now offers a wide variety of gourmet food lines in addition to grocery items all priced to match Woolworths — «no ridiculous markups here,» the women told me. There is a café menu and a casual room out the back where you can eat in. The woman advised they’re in the process of applying for a license to offer meals here at night. She also said the hot dogs and burgers where the best in in town. I can’t speak from experience(and I’m guessing she’s a little biased), but I would definitely given them a try next time we’re passing through. When I mentioned that I was a regular at the age of 10 and used to buy a $ 1 bag of lollies there in the 1980s, she whipped out a bag(albeit smaller than I remembered) and said they still sell them. Great service and a lovely location. Definitely worth stopping in here if you’re ever driving past.
