I actually been here couple of times and just remembered now to put a review. Service here is pretty good. Food here are pretty good too. Been to some few Japanese restaurants in Sydney CBD, but this is the only Japanese I like overall. Their meals are pretty tasty and prices are reasonable. The place is just outside the mall and parking is pretty hard. That’s the only thing. You just gotta find some parking if you’re driving.

If it were not for the Unilocal reviews of Sakae, I would never have found this amazing Japanese restaurant. So amazing I went twice this week!!! Consistently good, cheap and quality Japanese. Go the teriyaki chicken — a little crispy, skin left on — just the way I like it. Miso soup was perfection and always the best way to start your Japanese meal. After only finding it this week, absolutely confident this will be a regular haunt. Thank you fellow Unilocalers!

Yum yum! I had a katsu chicken bento box — it was incredible! The chicken was freshly cooked, the sashimi was fresh, and the miso was lovely. What a win. That all cost $ 15.80, plus a Sapporo was $ 7.80. These are not, perhaps, the cheapest prices but damn it was a quick and tasty dinner!

Sakae falls under the«It’s OK» heading for me. The food is OK. What really lets the place down is their prices and servings. You can get much better, more generous and less expensive casual Japanese dining in Sydney.

I regularly go to this restaurant for lunch as I work close by. The food is always good, I mainly eat the Katsu dons, Bento boxes or the Ramen. The $ 4.80 Shashimi special(you must purchase a main to get this special) is great value. You can eat in or there is a take away menu.

When I’m craving Japanese, I usually go to the Sushi Tei on the corner of Liverpool and Pitt St. Unfortunately my timing was wrong as they were closed(between their morning and evening opening hours) when I was starving the other day. Then I realised I should try a new place and plus you’ll never fall short of finding a japanese joint around Sydney town. Sure enough, across the street I found Sakae. The meals were decently priced and the range looked appetising. They had a few specials on offer, like the sashimi for $ 4.80(normally $ 9.80) with any main curry/noodle/don. So I opted for the chicken katsura don with the salmon sashimi. It arrived pretty quickly along with a tiny dish of what might’ve been creamy salad with bits of apple which was a nice surprise. The chicken katsura don was well portioned and came with miso. It satisfied my craving and my search for a new japanese restaurant. The staff were fast and efficient. Not as friendly as other stores, but good all the same.

When I first arrived in Sydney, I was wandering the streets of the CBD, taking in my new surroundings and when lunchtime came around, I stumbled upon this little Japanese restaurant at a time when the concept of easily affordable Japanese food was still a novelty to me(ahh the day’s of the weak Aussie dollar!). First impressions were good, it was full of Japanese people — always a good sign. Second the menu was varied and they had pictures which is pleasing when I’m not overly sure what the words on the menu mean. Oh, and they had saké, which I’m a very big fan of! Since my first visit there, I have been many more times. I try and vary my order a bit, but I always seem to go back to my first meal there — the Sakae Don($ 15.80). What arrives is an bowl of sushi rice topped with a generous layer of varying sushi, egg, cucumber, ginger and a blob of wasabi, served alongside the mandatory bowl of miso. It tastes fresh and is filling enough to last me through till dinner, which is often the downside of having sushi rolls for lunch — you’re always hungry an hour later! There are an abundance of Japanese eateries in Sydney, but why not give this one a try too!
