Great bagels used to be an American thing. That is until Brooklyn Hide Bagels came to town! Not suprisingly Unilocal recommended this fairly put of the way little joint in the backstreets of Surry Hills. A hipster little café specialising in delicious bagels(both with fillings and without). The café also serves a number of other non-bagel options as well! But why bother! Plain bagels start at $ 6.50 and ones with filling start from $ 10.50. Well worth it!

I have been looking for great places for breakfast and my search is concluded as of my trip to Brooklyn Hide Bagels. Really, there isn’t much to say that hasn’t been said, I ordered«The Midtown» with a buddy of mine. It was prepared and ready to eat in about five minutes and was easily worth the wait. All of the flavours blended spectacularly to form a perfect meal that was not only pretty healthy(comparatively), but pure, undiluted, deliciousness. As for the price, every stuffed bagel on the list is exactly $ 10(thanks $AUD tax inclusion) and is worth every cent and more. I will certainly return with a vengeance, ready to try more of the(roughly ten?) options they had on the menu. I recommend this highly to anyone who wants a cheap(For Sydney!) meal that is likely to blow your mind with flavour. Seriously, check it out!

Upon studying abroad here in Australia, my American friends back in uni told me that bagels are a scarcity in Australia. Knowing this made me question my decision to live in Australia for a few months. However, by some struck of luck my friend and I came across this glorious place. Having had been bagel deprived for 3 months, I was fiending to go to this place. This place is great for various reasons. 1) It’s super close to where I live and literally a 1 minute walk from my internship, which also makes it dangerous 2) the prices are so damned good 3) the assortments of offerings they have are delectable 3) it tastes so damned good, almost like home. This place is a godsend. I got an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and smoked salmon. The smoked salmon was only $ 2 extra and they literally gave me a small cup worth. That would NOT happen back home in America. God bless Australia’s portion size. Always a pleasant surprise. My friend and I were so overjoyed we finally found a decent bagel joint that we decided to get another bagel for«carry away». Or that’s what we told ourselves. This time, I wanted a sweet bagel so I got a blueberry bagel with butter and marmalade. Do my dissatisfaction, the marmalade was so bitter I had to spit it out immediately. Upon receiving this bagel, a worker said«See you later.» It’s as if he knew me. I will definitely back. Like tomorrow.

Bagels, and I mean New York style bagels, are hard to come by in Sydney. They’re rarely made how they’re supposed to be — instead of being shiny and crusty on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside, they’re thick and crumbly and extremely difficult to eat. I didn’t think when I stumbled on Brooklyn Hide Bagels that its bagels would be bad — that’s all they make! That said, my expectations weren’t too high either given the poor standard of Sydney bagels. I ordered a blueberry bagel with cinnamon cream cheese, and although it didn’t blow me away, its flavours were decent and it had a good texture. Good enough to put a smile on my face? Not quite :)

I am American and can attest to how good their bagels are. Best in Sydney I’ve found after a year. They are not exactly the same but close enough. Prices are fair — pricey, depending on what you get. Even a nice & chilled out place to eat alone. Outdoor seating on fun fur-covered wooden boxes, too. Décor consists of succulents, dark wood, super relaxed barista-feel, busy staff, and really great music. Music is modern, relaxing & upbeat indie rock. Great spot for any occasion, even a first date, catch up with a friend, or lunch break with a coworker. Smallish-venue so wouldn’t bring more than 6 ppl here, preferably 4 people or less. $ 10 bagel sandwiches are filling. Got the Brooklyn Hide and the braised pork was succulent, just the right amount of juicy. The white cream sauce was the best part. Messy so it’ll have you licking your fingers clean. Can not waste this gold!

The best bagels outside of New York! Yes that’s a big statement but seriously Brooklyn Hide has the best bagels anywhere outside of New York. They have to be tasted to be believed. There is a choice for everyone and you won’t be disappointed as they are all delicious, the problem is choosing just 1. They are made with beautiful fresh ingredients. And the coffee is delicious, be early as seating can be a premium but well worth the wait for a seat. 2 Bagels &2 Coffees for $ 25 is great value.

Bagels are not a common item on Aussie brunch menus. Before I stumbled upon Brooklyn Hide, I wouldn’t even know where to find them if I ever had a craving for bagels. What I like most about Brooklyn Hide is that it is not just a US bagel joint, it also offers other variations of the more«Aussie» breakfast food. It sure is a good addition to the Surry Hill café map.

Who doesn’t like hole shaped food. My bf loves bagel so I had to take him here, and we weren’t disappointed. Nice menu, with a mix of salads, wraps and bagels. Some traditionalist may disagree with the more gourmet bagel fillings but they were damn delicious so I don’t care. The bagels were nicely toasted and the fillings/cream cheese were generous. The sticky chai had a nice spice mix, but a little heavy on the honey for me. Only other tiny negative was my apple cinnamon cream cheese tasted like regular which was a bummer. Luckily I love cream cheese and happily schmeared(ok drowned) my bagel in it

In a relatively quiet street surrounded by terrace houses in the Hills of Surry is this trendy café serving NY style bagels. I’m not quite sure if their bagels quite pass the NY authenticity test, but they are certainly better than the ones you can find in Sydney bakeries/supermarkets! It is only a small place that can probably seat 30 people max with a few milk crates to sit on the street outside as well. The guys at the coffee punch out decent coffees from the Little Marionette which is well rated in Sydney town. There’s a few guys in the back who cook up the fillings for the bagel sandwiches but you can keep it simple and get plain bagels or simply with cream cheese + smoked salmon. Not a bad experience in Sydney town if you’re yearning for the NY bagel experience !

It had been years since I had a bagel. I was doing okay with my life, I had mostly moved on and forgot about the ways of the bagel. I had been warned off trying any Australian bagels, told they just weren’t good enough. Then it all started. I found a coffee shop that had a poppyseed bagel on display and I just had to have it. And it was delicious. It was everything I remembered. And I couldn’t look back. The demon had been unleashed. Now all I saw were bagels, and I had to seek them out. My research led me to Brooklyn Hide. I’m generally pretty simple when it comes to bagels. Plain or poppyseed(I always found the Everything to be too oniony) and only ever plain cream cheese(I find flavoured ones taste a bit fake). Feeling adventurous I added on a side of smoked salmon on this occasion. I come from the west coast of Canada. A place known for its smoked salmon. Brooklyn Hide didn’t disappoint. A bit subtle, but overall soft and delicious. I’ll have to make it down here for lunch one day to try one of their bagel sandwiches — just the thought of one takes me back home.

Thank GOODNESS for a bagel place in Sydney– as an American living in town I’d really been craving a good bagel and these guys know their stuff. The owners work in the store and you can tell that they’re committed to making proper New York bagels. Both have spent significant time in the US sharpening their skills– while that’s not a necessary component to having a great place it is a detail that’s appreciated. I opted for one of their bagel sandwiches and it was filling and delicious. My only gripe is that these bagels are much smaller than your traditional NYC bagel– probably not a bad thing to have fewer carbs but they’re so delicious I wanted more(without having to order a second one!)

edit: bumping up to 5 stars because the last 2 or 3 times I’ve gone I’ve had unbelievable bagels. while they don’t compare in size to my native Jersey bagels I’m seeing the ingredients and flavours as much classier. plus good music playing all the time. today was kaki king who I don’t think I’ve ever heard outside of the US. really great spot. friendly staff always up for an early morning chat. falls a bit short in terms of bagel sizing and shape, and also lack of bagel variety.(i am from NY/NJ area so have lots of experience in bagel consumption). but stellar coffee, and good pairings /offerings for trimmings on the bagel ‘wiches. would like to see smoked whitefish salad and also please make the lox saltier /stronger(or maybe it’s the honey vinegar that balanced it out too much?).

I had high hopes for this place. American style cuisine, especially the bagel craze, has finally been catching on here in Sydney. It was mid-morning on a Saturday and I happily bounded toward this Surry Hills joint with eager taste buds in tow. The inside of the restaurant was spacious and warm and fit in well with the hip neighborhood. The events that unfolded shortly after I stepped foot inside, however, were extremely disappointing: Strike 1: The person taking orders had NO idea what I meant when I said schmear. Not only is it referred to as schmear on the website AND on the menu but it’s Bagels 101 and it felt wrong that I had to explain what that was. And if the website claims to be «as New York as it gets» then step number one is knowing that cream cheese = schmear in the context of bagels. Strike 2: I ordered a couple of bagels for takeaway so I could have them at home. I emphasized UNTOASTED(I probably said this 3 times) with cream cheese and smoked salmon on the side. Most people read this and realize that this means nothing is cooked and should take no more than 5 minutes to throw all of that in a bag and condiments in a container. I waited 25 minutes for this. Strike 3: At least 3 people before me who ordered hot bagel sandwiches received their takeaway orders before me. After politely asking about the status of my order, the bagel technician behind the bar rolled his eyes as he stuffed the cream cheese and smoked salmon in a make shift cup(because they thought I was having it there). Then it was brought out to me in take away bags as TOASTED. I had to fight my hunger fueled tears from welling. I can fully appreciate the simplicity in their menu but that makes it even more unacceptable to get the service basics all wrong. The bagels themselves were average. I tried the everything bagel and there was a good chewy consistency but not as plump as I would have liked. My advice to Brooklyn Hide would be offer the ability to order a dozen or half dozen untoasted bagels and invest in some reliable take away containers for the cream cheese and fix-ins. This is great for people on the go and want to stock up with bagels at home or great for businesses that want to have a simple breakfast out for their employees.

Hmm, strangely enough it’s not the bagels that sold me on this place. I thought the actual bagel was A-OK but a bit average. However, loved the«bagel wheel» aka bagel sandwich I tried, great coffees and teas, and overall atmosphere. It’s a simple menu. You can either get a bagel with cream cheese(or another condiment of your choice), or one of the bagel sandwiches. A lot of them are named after places in NYC. I had the ‘Tribeca’ which had wagyu bresaola, ham, goats cheese, cranberry jam and spinach. Super yummy. I thought a lot of the sandwich combos were cute because it gave a «New York meets Sydney» feel. You could also order Vegemite for your bagel. Not my first pick for my bagel, but guess it could work.
