No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability has been operating for a few years, and providing people with disabilities an opportunity to learn skills and develop performance work; in some cases they have put the performance work on the stage to the wider community, in other cases it is a class situation and just for immediate class mates family and friends. One positive thing is the social element of these types of classes for intellectually disabled folk; the other thing is it has components of life skills woven into it. Communication and presentation are main elements of theatre, so it is a focus in the classes NSA provide — these skills also translate to the day to day life of any individual, so without it being a boring exercise people can learn how to make their day to day existence better through classes in theatre and performance. Often the groups and classes go for visits to other organisations festivals and theatre companies around the country, always with a few extra helpers and carers along with their usual range of tutors. Managed by Phyllis Jane Rose who once worked as a lecturer at Flinders University, an American woman with a lot of experience, this is a great occupational therapy for any disabled individual from the slow learner through to the down syndrome institutionalised. While they do run regular classes and weekly activities if you are new and wanting to become involved the only way to do that is by appointment, so give Phyllis Jane a call and set up a time with her.
