Stanmore Station

Stanmore. Can you really have more Stan? Rename this puppy Stanless, cos it’s sparse.
How sparse?
On a need to know basis it’s a simple two platforms that drops you in the middle of nowhere in Stanmore, and you need to leg it to get to the closest highway.
Speaking of legging it, there ain’t no barricades and you know what they say… opal cards are only used by honest commuters ;)

Staying for 10 days between Stanmore and Newtown stations, I quickly decided that this was my preferred station. It is quiet and clean. With only two platforms, you don’t need to think too much about where to stand and there is a good selection of coffee shops nearby.
There is no ticket counter here though so best buy an opal card. There is a newsagent on either side of the station.

Stanmore Station has grown up. I’m so proud of this little guy: back in the day when I was a school student, I would have to trek to and from this station back home in an attempt to flee the ongoing monotony that was secondary education. Now, this might sound crazy … but only three months ago CityRail installed electronic timetables and a speaker system. That’s right. Stanmore Station has caught up with the year 2000! This that hi-​tek stuff!
Gone is the mystery of exactly where that train is. Gone is the mystery of where it is heading. Remaining is the mystery of why some trains just don’t stop at Stanmore, a fact you only realise as the train whips past the platform and you get a sinking feeling in your stomach. The more things change, the more they remain the same.
As we all know with CityRail, this is not the pre-​eminent transport option in the world (number one: bayou hovercraft) but it does the job and the recent upgrades at Stanmore Station make life a tiny bit easier.
