Horrible takeaway tonight. The noodles in the chow Mein were stale and soft The peanuts in the Szechwan were terribly soft and stale. It ruined the meal. This is not the only time this has happened but it is the last time we get a takeaway here. It is a pity because the meals are tasty but I wonder now if the meat is fresh or if it is also stale and just strongly flavored.

You can eat in at Seacrest Village Chinese Restaurant, but I am writing this review with a bellyful of food that was ordered over the phone and taken away. The chemical reactions going on in my stomach right now – between Mongolian beef and duck with plum sauce, salt-and-pepper squid and Asian greens – is an intense one. I almost always feel that I could die after eating Chinese food. When it’s bad, I feel that I could die from food poisoning. When it’s good, I feel that I could die from overeating. In this case, I am pleased to say, the latter holds true. Seacrest Village Chinese, nestled in next to a takeaway fish ‘n’ chips shop and a Polish bakery, uses fresh ingredients and uses them well. Its dishes are neither sickly nor heavy, and nor, importantly, are they overpriced. While the menu certainly bears exploring – there are over two hundred items on it, which is actually kind of insane – my favourite dish remains the fried boneless chicken in plum sauce. Of the dishes I have tried, the only one I have anything negative to say about are the Asian greens, which tend to be way more garlicky than they need to be. But when a filling, intensely satisfying dinner for four can cost less than ten dollars a head, one can probably withstand a little garlic.
