Amazing establishment with friendly staff and great food. Always a good place for an after movie drink or dinner with some friends. An iconic New Farm venue that just keeps delivering.

The local bar we all wish we had… Relaxed, friendly, good food, fabulous cocktails and a good spot to sit and watch the world go by. The service is always fast and friendly.

Yet another bar hindered by being taken over by new management. It’s still quiet a well designed little bar, the sunken table area is a great place to relax and socialise with friends, but I do feel it’s lost it’s homely kind of vibe. It used to target a younger crowd but after raising it’s nose at a few of us it eventually succumbed to the pressures of the neighbourhood and starting targeting older people looking for a quiet meal and a few cocktails. It’s a great place if you’re looking for a more mature experience, the laid back nature of Gerties is going to be the perfect place for you, but if your looking for a wilder night then heading up Brunswick St towards the valley centre is where you’ll need to go.

I will forever remember Gertie’s for one of its cocktails, a toxic blue number I had one night that was so potent I have no recollection of anything that happened after half way through drinking it. Several years later I still reminisce with friends about it, ‘Omg remember those blue cocktails we had at Gertie’s?’ As well as great cocktails, they have some exotic bar food and the nicest bar staff I have ever experienced in a bar. Every time I visit Gertie’s they are so friendly and happy to have a chat and pretty much just how I think bartenders should be. I also love their bathrooms. Don’t raise your eyebrows, you would love them too. The walls are painted with chalkboard paint and there is chalk to draw on them with. I had great fun leaving drunken messages for my friends and reading their messages for me as we played tag team visiting the ladies room. Gertie’s is a fair distance from the main night spot area in Fortitude Valley but if you’re willing to walk/cab a few k’s its a great little bar to start the night at.

Gertie’s Bar and Restaurant is a mainstay on the New Farm bar scene. Positioned between the raucous Fortitude Valley and the well-to-do Teneriffe, Gertie’s attracts patrons looking for something a little bit classy away from the nightclub scene. The menu offers a delicious range of tapas priced between $ 8 and $ 26. The stools lining the wide windowsills are the perfect spot to peruse the impressive list of wines, beers, spirits, and cocktails, and watch the world go by at sunset. The functions area, which sits a step below the main floor, is a great place to organise a catch-up with friends, work drinks, or a special event, and the lovely staff will display your special message on the chalkboard outside. Whether it’s food, drinks, or ambience you are after, Gertie’s offers all in spades. Check out the Tuesday specials for a cheap and cheerful weeknight get-together.

A lot has changed on the New Farm Brunswick St strip over the last 10 years however Gertie’s is still holding strong, and for good reason. The ambience is cool and understated, the bar staff are charming and knowledgeable, and the bar food is great. Pizza’s(flatbreads) are my favourite, I love simple pizza made from fresh dough with quality toppings so it’s pretty much all I order over lazy drinking afternoons at Gerties. Space can be a bit cramped, so if you’re meeting a group it’s a good idea to try and book the big square table in the back.

Whether you’re keen for a Tuesday sesh or a lazy Sunday afternoon cider, Gerties knows how to deliver the goods. Gerties was always popular on a Tuesday for uni students needing a welcome just-shy-of-mid-week distraction. For me, that was a few years ago but not a lot has changed. I also recently got to experience the classier side of Gerties when I attended a birthday dinner there. I think the very best food they have is hands down their flatbread — known to us plebs as pizza. They use fresh herbs and veggies and the cheese is literally melt-in-your-mouth quality. They also do some of the most tender calamari I’ve tasted. Divine! For a function like the birthday dinner I attended, you can also order bread, cheese, and meat platters to start — also really delicious. Gerties food is commendable if you ever want more than a drink or four. You can also do a few cheeky ciders without hurting the bank too much. If you’re a beer or wine fan, they have pretty impressive lists for both.
