Probably the best 10 dollar burger in Sydney. Very tasty, nice environment, excellent cold refreshments. Definitely worth a visit!

The New Hampton: where Australiana goes to die a slow and noisy death. Copper reliefs of Australian flora and fauna clash offensively with exposed wood, which again clashes with old style images of print media and advertising. The interior design hasn’t decided what it wants to be, which left us unsure of where we were. The saving grace of the New Hampton was the service and the bar snacks. The polenta fries are a must, and the capsicum dip is delightfully tangy. The arancini excelled and the pea salad was a light side to the rest of my light sides. Service was great, but we were only a few of the very few diners at New Hampton on a Thursday night. The pokies kill the vibe, the gigantic television is unnecessary and the fake fire is an affront to real fires. The best we could deduce was that the New Hampton is targeting backpackers with a taste for the local. Seriously, be warned, the fire is fake.

I’ve passed this place a few times on my walk home and finally got the chance to venture in last night– I can’t decide if I felt like I was stepping into a private wine cellar in Napa or if I was in some sort of posh ski lodge in Vail, but this place has nailed the comfortable/effortlessly cool vibe. Details like wooden beams running down the ceiling, old fashioned wine lockers, a fireplace(fake, but still awesome!), and wine barrels as sink basins really make this place something special. They have a great happy hour from 5 – 7 every night, with $ 9.50 cocktails and beer specials as well, and while I didn’t get to stay to try any of the food the menu looked amazing. Great addition to the Cross, especially if you’re looking for a place that you can be a civilized human being.
