Another update and a reno and a name change. It’s going to take ages for it to catch on. Looks good if not a bit/alot hipster. Will we ever escape the 80s? Dissapointing to see a price hike on the beloved favorite of locals, the chicken burger. It will now set you back $ 19 and just for thrills you have to pay $ 2 extra for the bacon. This is at least, blasphemy and a little bit profiteering for my liking. You can choose your side now, that sort of is a consolation. I guess. Try the pigfest platter if you have a group. $ 37 but generous serve. Cow and moon Gelato for dessert. You can now also buy carafes of wine out of the barrels on tap. The games room has been moved to an adults only part of the front bar, I will be interested to see how this goes down with the pram brigade. In all a retro look that has spruced it up somewhat, what I would like to see these guys reconsider that burger price. Though I suppose it will help my friends and I lose weight when we stop buying 2 a week.

I had never visited the Newington before the makeover so I can’t compare, but I like this place. Have been on a few weekend afternoons for drinks. Nice enough craft beer selection on tap and heaps in bottles to choose from, and a good bottle shop out the back. I had never tried the food before until yesterday. Our group of 5 had the cheeseburger, buttermilk fried chicken burger, and three basic sandwich/wrap specials. All meals were decently sized and tasty. The chips are thin fries with good seasoning. Burgers and specials are priced around $ 14-$ 17, larger mains(ie. the parma or jerk chicken) around $ 18-$ 24. The outdoor(partially covered) area is fantastic with big booth tables and a fake grass area out the back for dogs & smokers — though there was a group with two HUGE dogs in the main courtyard. Fri-Sun they have a DJ playing 60’s tunes on vinyl. Great atmosphere. My favourite thing about this place though is the pub cat Gizmo. He hangs out near the bottle shop most of the time, but I have seen him wander through the courtyard and into the pub on quieter afternoons.

Geographically somewhere between the Warren View and the Oxford Tavern. The Newington Hotel has had a little make over(possibly recently — not sure as I hadn’t been in for almost a year) with some new décor and a new menu. I tried the Ribs and onion rings. Both were fab. I do love good ribs and these ribs were cooked just right. The coleslaw was a little heavy on the mayo for my liking but each to their own on that front. Although I am not generally excited about the sprucing up of it seems, all Inner Sydney venues, I do like the new menu at the Newington.

As far as pub food goes this place is ok. They got rid of the huge BBQ in the middle so it’s no longer cook your own, but the kitchen doesn’t do too badly on the feeding front. The outside has heaters if you like sitting outside in winter, they did used to have blankets out here for people but they’ve since disappeared I believe. The staff are still helpful, lovely and know their drinks however. And they have trivia on Wednesday nights. And I think Karaōke on Friday nights, don’t quote me on the karaōke though. I haven’t lived across the road from the bad warbling in a while…

This pub is one of the last of the old school pubs around & it’s very cool. Cook your own steak on the outdoor bbq & they supply almost every type of marinade, condiment & dressing you can think of. It’s just come under new management & they’re planning a new bistro menu too. Invites coming soon!
