Ok, I’m 34 weeks pregnant and whilst it doesn’t look like I’ve put on much weight, I’m constantly hungry. Rather than stuffing myself silly like my pre-preggers days, I resort to five or so small meals a day. With 30min to kill and hunger pangs, I strolled up and down the barracks considering my options until I spotted my old friend, Happy Little Dumplings! Perfectomundo! I opted for the signature pack with pork belly and duck dumplings, found a cosy spot and salivated whilst getting myself comfy. Oh how I’ve forgotten the titillating scent and the meticulous little dumplings. They do make me so happy! These little pillows of delight were perfectly cooked and they made me swoon as the slithered down my throat. Thank you, HLD, for making the perfectly sized tasty delights!

I went during lunch time mid-week and felt that the dumplings were overpriced, definitely not hot enough and slightly too chewy, possibly undercooked. The selection was fairly limited, and even more so for vegetarian options also they were tasty enough. Staff were friendly but chatting very casually and I didn’t feel that it was appropriate in front of customers, though I was attended to promptly. The concept is good, though a fairly Westernised version especially given the«gourmet» description. If you have hankering for dumplings, I would recommend holding off for a trip to the Valley, or visiting your local Asian grocer for a bag of frozen dumplings that will cost half the $ 12.50 you’ll pay for a serve of six here.

Considering the other dining options around the Barracks are more along the lines of sit down meals, pub offerings, sushi or hamburgers… Happy Little Dumplings fills a void for those that want a tasty bite on the go. With something for everyone(Vegan, Vegetarian, MEATEATER, Seafood Lover) the dumplings are the perfect tasty morsel for lunch, dinner or a bite after the movies. There are plenty of options including a very reasonable $ 10 Dumpling Junky Pack with a bit of everything. Food and Service is always fantastic, fast and fresh. A good consistent option.

Ever find yourself caught between meetings, no having eaten lunch and not wanting to compromise on your reasonably healthy eating New Year’s deal with yourself? Okay, then you’ll understand how I felt arriving at The Barrack’s recently. Faced with the choice of sandwiches, or burgers and not really feeling like sushi I opted for a few bite-sized parcels from Happy Little Dumplings. Located where Coaldrake’s used to be, this HLD is much like the others. There’s Har Gow, Steamed Buns and folded dumplings. For around $ 15-$ 20 you’ll get a feast, for $ 10 a snack. I ordered a few Prawn and coriander har gows, a chicken and mushroom dumpling and a bbq bun. $ 12 including a drink wasn’t too bad in my books.
