We often stop here for breakfast and it’s pretty standard café fare however on the slightly pricey side which is expected for the area. Don’t expect any fancy spices or fusion flavours. Quality is good and serving sizes will fill you up.

Jagos is a welcoming café — in appearance, service and wafting aromas. It’s right outside the Stanton Library with it’s lush green foliage entrance surrounding the cafes outside dining area. The inside is cosy and comfortable with many local business people and housewives making it a local meet and greet. The menu is worth a once over. My picks are the Butternut Pumpkin Ravioli with goats cheese and sage brown butter($ 19.50) and the Corn Fritter with Bacon, roast tomato, avocado, rocket and chilli mayonnaise($ 16.50). Most of the mum in my mother’s group will pick up a take away bulky sandwich and coffee from here and it’s not such a rare thing to see a baby tuck in to the gourmet yumminess when no ones looking. Coffee was a tad bitter for my liking. They do cocktail parties and sit down menus.

Jagos is a bit of a North Sydney institution. The ladies who run this place should be sought out by the producers of the ‘Grumpy Old Women’ series. They’re delightful! The service is efficient in the style of ‘Where do you want to sit? Come Dear, don’t dilly-dally. Sit yourself here. The sun is shining you should be outside. Now sit down and hush.’ I like being given directions and she’s right it is nice to sit outside here in amongst the Ivy. More. More! When I indicate I might be a bit of a salad muncher, there is a hint of disapproval, so I order the fishcakes and receive an approving smile. It arrives by hand though a forklift might have been more appropriate. The serving is massive. 2HUGE fishcakes with accompanying salad. The sauces are not subtle and it’s a bit of a flavour explosion. I’m left debating whether the cakes are fully cooked through(given their size) as they’re very moist but I see the waitress eyeing me, so I take down and gulp and keep on going. I don’t fancy a lecture about starving children in Africa. For all my concerns, I eat the lot and refuse the obligatory offer of dessert. Tut, tut. A lovely dining experience with ladies who their own minds… and yours too. Truly charming.

Classy eatery partway up Miller Street. It’s away from the busy-ness of the southern end which makes its patio nice for a quiet lunch. Good, friendly service, and well-prepared dishes. Not sure they’re worth the prices, though: it was the most expensive salt-and-pepper squid I’ve had in Sydney. It was also the chewiest. Indoor and outdoor seating.
