This place is great– knowledgable and helpful staff, lots of uncommon plants and all the common ones too. Much more than I expected from a smaller Local store. Be aware that if there is a storm they will close early! I got to listen to one of their neighbors practicing his opera singing as I browsed because– Newtown.

So Astri, whom I met at a Unilocal event, got me suddenly and unexpectedly interested in succulents and I’ve now been to this nursery a couple of times and have four cacti as a result. I was really surprised by their range! as it looks like a small shop from the front but goes way back. There were so many different cacti I really agonised over my choice(and had to talk myself out of buying a bonsai). They have great deals like certain herbs and vegetable seedlings at six for $ 25 — pretty good if you want to stock up on basil! And they have some really nice pots in a variety of shapes and colours. The staff are quite friendly and happy to point you in the right direction. As a bonus on your receipt you get a voucher for a discount off your next purchase — even if it only works out to be thirty cents or so I thought it was a nice gesture.

A gardener’s paradise, this garden market has anything you’d ever need from supplies to organic seeds, beautiful flowers and herbs. The prices are great and the outside flower area is a beautiful testament to why we all love gardening; so we can have flowers as beautiful as those and herbs as delicious in our everyday lives. The staff is extremely helpful and they also do free delivery if you’re purchasing something too big to carry.

I love love love garden stores, despite the fact that I have the complete opposite of a green thumb(red pinkie toe?) and can kill anything growing in my vicinity. Newtown Garden Market has everything you need to make your flower or vegetable garden thrive, or make your indoor herb garden ever-so fruitful. There are countless varieties of plantables, yes. But there are also plenty of things to fill your outdoor space with artsiness and style. I couldn’t help but marvel over the tin garden sculptures of animals. Fashioned out of recycled materials(or so it seemed), these creatures are creative and somewhat abstract. Position one or two next to a solar powered gurgling bird bath and you might never want to leave your garden again. For me, I was drawn to the succulents. Spiky, cute, and virtually un-kill-able, these little bad boys are my favourite. Maybe it’s because they also make me feel like a bit of a badass. It’s not true, but a girl can dream, can’t she?

For those of you that know Newtown, you’ll know that it is a pretty busy place with a lot of people, traffic, buildings and not as much parks and greenery when compared to some suburbs, especially King Street. That’s why I like to head in to the Newtown Garden Market and escape the madness for a while. It’s peaceful and tranquil in there as the Don Burke in me comes out as I make my way around looking at anything and everything from the flower pots and accessories to the water features, the vegie patch and the cactus plants. I have a soft spot for the cactus because I’ll know they’ll survive if I neglect to look after them for a day or two. or few! If you need something for the garden or just looking to enjoy some peace and quiet around King Street in Newtown then it’s well worth popping in to the Newtown Garden Market.

As the undecipherable graffiti wording above the entrance to this shop suggests, this ain’t your normal garden centre. It’s a sort of ghetto garden centre complete with bare concrete walls and more graffiti signs. Edgy. The shop is divided into two sections. The main section has all the conventional garden equipment displayed on shelves, with the decorative pots and fixtures through in the neighbouring room. There is a great variety of pots and other decorations like statues here so you have the ability to be really imaginative when you’re designing your garden. Through in the back courtyard the garden centre comes to life! It is packed out with beautiful flowers and exciting leafed plants displayed in a delightfully messy fashion. It’s a sort of floral haven without any of the twee associations. Although this area is only small you can easily lose yourself among the beautiful collections of plants on sale. The prices are kept at a reasonably low level and the staff are brimming with enthusiasm and knowledge to impart on you!
