I feel like I could pull up a comfy chair, a blanket and a good book and just unwind in this lovely little bookstore all day. It is such a cosy and quiet space and although it is not as big as most other stores there is still a huge selection of books to choose from. They have a great range of cookbooks, fiction and everything else you could possible need and even a quiet reading corner for the kids. Very glad I stopped in for a look!

With a commitment to local engagement, Beaufort Street Books arranges(and hosts) regular book club events, signings from Authors and cookbook events. The staff are friendly, and will go out of their way to find/recommend a book for you, and even will order books in for you with no fuss. A very clean, yet warm comfortable atmosphere, with play area for small children, with a limited, but varied selection. Good selection of cook books, and a wide range of coffee tables books as well as a shelf or two chock full of classics.

These guys went to all lengths to get a book for me recently, I was really impressed by the effort and the efficiency with which they did it. They’re unbelievably friendly here — and not in a false way either. It’s the real deal, and I think that’s the edge these guys have over other book stores in the area. The catalogue is strong too, lots of beautiful coffee tables books as well as the latest releases, classics and niche reads in fiction and nonfiction. A really lovely book store. I hope it sticks around.

Everyone is familiar with Planet Books and you’re probably wondering what does BSB(Beaufort St Books) have that Planet doesn’t? Well allow me to inform you: — BSB offers a more one-on-one service; the ladies who work here will talk with you in detail about different book titles. — The ambience is very still and peaceful rather than hip and happening — There is a pretty nifty children’s play area — Selection in cooking and children’s book is more specialised and extensive — BSB regularly host book signings, which you can attend by joining their mailing list. I attended one by a wholefoods cookbook author who talked about her book as well as doing some cooking demonstrations which we got to taste too.

Ok, so the world of Planet — Planet Books, Planet Video, the Daily Planet — live a stone’s throw away up the street, but that’s no reason to miss out on Beaufort Street Books. Yes, there’s another awesome bookstore up the road, and ok, that other bookstore may have a bigger range, but Beaufort Street still has plenty to offer and plenty of character. And to me two bookstores are better than one. How awesome is it to be able to walk down a local street, full of cafes and restaurants, and have the pleasure on not one, but two incredible bookstores? Very awesome, that’s how.

Poor Beaufort Books. With Planet Books bursting with their heaving collection of printed matter, Beaufort Books seems to be playing second fiddle to the hipster hot spot. Not that I have a problem with the underdog. Whilst they may not have the whole package that Planet does(books, videos, clothes, and a new café to boot), they do have some redeeming points which Planet lacks. Their catalogue mightn’t be as extensive, and you might not be able to curl up in a ball and read at your leisure late into the witching hour, but you will feel a lot more welcome. The staff here greet you upon your arrival, and are very happy to help with your queries. I had a nice little chat with the store clerk about David Sedaris, something which I’ve never done at Planet. It isn’t really a book store I could«lose myself» in, but it’s well worth a gander if you’re strolling by(or if their vegetarian cook books catch your eye, like they did with me!).

Beaufort Street Books is a tidy little bookshop tucked away down the bottom of the main strip of Mt Lawley. While it doesn’t have the vast selection of books that Planet Books has to offer, it also doesn’t have the large amounts of people. It is a relaxing place to go and peruse through the different sections of books, the various genres of fiction, the auto biographies, the travel books and so on. They have a wonderful childrens section, set in the middle of the store there is a small play area for them with toys and surrounded by bright and exciting children’s books. It is a place that I’d like to take my children one day and show them how special reading can be. It is a place you can get to know the staff and become a local, it feels a lot more personal than Planet, because it has the time and capacity to be.
