Having a trusted mechanic is more important to me than having a family doctor. I for one have never gone to one doctor and I don’t feel my health has suffered as a result. A trusted mechanic however saves me time, money and peace of mind. I’ve been going to K-​Mart Tyres and Auto at Garden City for the past ten years.
At first, it was because of the convenience. Being situated near the big Garden City Busway meant you could drop your car off and catch the bus to work.
However, after I went in for my major service and they quoted me $ 1800 for work that needed to be done, I started shopping around. Oh how I shopped! I rang different mechanics, spoke to knowledgeable shop assistants and got myself all confused about the range of prices I was being quoted for the same job.
In the end I went with Lubemobile because they were the cheapest and also because they came out to my house. Big mistake. It turned out the reason they were the cheapest was because they quoted me for another engine size. They didn’t realise this until they took my car apart and when they re-​quoted me, it ended up several hundred dollars more than my usual mechanic at K-​mart.
After this fiasco, I have stuck to the trustworthy team at K-​mart Tyres and Auto. Their mechanics are informative and helpful. They can explain problems in layman’s terms and never make me feel stupid for asking simple questions about my car’s problems. Also, even though they technically finish work at 5pm, they’re quite happy to wait back so I can pick up my car if I can’t get away from work until 5:30.
So now that I have a dream team taking care of all my automobile needs, maybe it is time to find a family doctor.
