Was surprised by a 2hour home barista course by my partner for my birthday so off we went yesterday to take on the challenge of perfecting our cappuccinos and lattes. Roe was our barista who took us on the journey from growing the beans to perfecting your grind and pour. We were presented with a complimentary coffee while we waited and some delicious dark chocolate, orange and raspberry muffins were brought out during the class to enjoy with the coffees we were making. There was lots of time for questions and practice on the double boiler Breville machines. Just sad to inform we were the last home barista course available as they are now moving to commercial courses only. I would however check out their café and sample one of their coffees as it is a great little spot with exceptional coffee! We left happy and full of energy. And coffee!

Great coffee, but the food isn’t fantastic. I would stick with the baked goods and ready made stuff. I look forward to working my way through their coffee menu. Interesting stuff.

I am a regular and always have a long black while I wait for my beans to be ground. They have a great variety of beans with useful tasting notes to help you decide. I haven’t tried the food, but it looks pretty good.

The Aussie original is even better than the Toby’s in Singapore. A full coffee and food. Recommend apricot & nectarine compote and sandwich special(from case) rather than avocado smash(too sour)

What a discovery. I’m usually all about the tiny hole in the wall cafés hidden up some unmarked stairs, in old shop fronts etc. The typical melbourne café. This is not one of those. I came along for the Unilocal café smart fundraiser. Huge open layout with high ceilings and lots of well designed furniture. I really liked their range of coffee brewing equipment for sale which unlike some other cafés around town these guys actually use them all(I’m talking to you sensory lab!). The all important coffee test was a thumbs up — quite nice. I also got a espresso brownie to share and while it was nice found it a little dry and could not taste any coffee. Still the open kitchen was really nice and I would definitely consider coming back for a bite to eat and a coffee. It’s a nice place to relax with a book or newspaper and large enough to not feel very crowded or cramped. I like it.

Toby’s Estate was supporting CafeSmart so I thought I’d be involved and help out any way I could. I was only there briefly to buy a coffee and catch up with other Unilocalers but I would definitely go again. Long communal tables, open space café, I can tell they take pride in their coffee too!

Another perfectly decent modestly-sized café in the CBD. They take pride in what they do with their beans and offer a decent selection to choose from. There’s also a decent selection of coffee gear on your left as you walk in the door. Just in case you needed some more filter paper for you pour-overs or you felt like buying an aeropress. The coffee is as nice as it should be, a perfect little helper to get you through the day when you need it. Toby’s is exactly the standard a Melbourne café should be. That’s about it. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed.

High ceilings, nice open café and a perfect spot to grab a quiet coffee to sit and enjoy… at least it was when I ducked in during the school holiday period. I suspect it’s probably heaving most other times! If you can grab a seat and stay a while, the staff are absolutely lovely and very knowledgeable. There’s free wifi if you’ve got your laptop with you and a tasty looking breakfast and lunch menu to graze on while you work. The coffee is obviously Toby’s Estate, offered in a range of espresso and filter options. You can even have the option of a single or double V60 pour over, which is uncommon in cafes and perfect if you want a filter without paying a full $ 6+ for a 2 cup. They also sell coffee paraphenalia for home and run espresso courses if you’re a budding barista. I didn’t end up trying the food, but the pastry chef popped his head out and tried to tempt my friend and I with some tasty treats as we were getting ready to leave. I packed my will power that day, but if you need a pick me up for a case of 3.30itis, Toby’s Estate is a great choice.

Toby’s Estate sits in the location of the old Glicks bakery café, which I was quite attached to. I met a friend there at his request and at 10:30am they were almost at capacity. While I waited I was able to browse their range of coffee making supplies and accoutrement, Melbournia books, and range of house tea blends. After being offered their friendly table service, our order arrived promptly and my long black was, quiet frankly, weapon’s grade. Having only been awake for an hour, I left Toby’s practically vibrating down Flinders Lane. They had a good selection of pastries, sandwiches, and other morning tea and lunch items. Seating is mixed between tables for two to four, a larger communal table, bench stool seating overlooking the bar, and a waiting area with stump stools caters for takeaway orders. It’s still quite spacious in contrast to many of Melbourne’s cramper hipster coffee joints. No bagels to be seen though, I am disappoint.

A great medium sized coffee shop and café in Flinders Lane. Toby’s have all the paraphernalia you would come the expect from a speciality coffee shop in a bright and airy space. On the food side they they are producing good café faire and good prices. I’m a fan of the baked eggs. For a sit down breakfast or lunch for 2 – 3 people Toby’s is great.

At precisely the benchmark standards for Melbourne café’s these days, this new Toby’s outlet offering awards us will a full range of teas, coffee’s, retail shopping items and hot chocolate. This is enhanced by a daily made items in the food counter, and menu for breakfast and lunch . It’s also very handy to drop in for breakfast and dig into a mountain of avocado and feta smash on bread, tasty mushrooms, or spiced quinoa porridge with nice things added. Good qaulity coffee and a good range; siphon, V60 dripper and big or small chemex, depending. Also an espirt espresso machine. But don’t fear, as there’s also a great selection of baked treats– cakes, and sweet items to go with coffee-ing. Or, if you’re in the sandwich mood, they have these too– which can be toasted. Great pricing, and though it does get busy with corporate types, it’s also a great to hang out and enjoy yourself/the space. Full and impressive range of take home roasted coffee beans and teas, if you so desire. Also, another good place for cool coffee gadgets.

A beautiful addition to the CBD coffee scene. With a big bright open space, loads of light wood, pot plants and plenty of seating to cater to the busy crowds during lunch time. Stop in for a coffee(espresso on the awesome Spirit espresso machine) or any number of filtered styles. I like that you can get a Chemex for one or two people — very clever. The menu is focused on seasonal produce and is really well priced, with most items hovering around the $ 10 mark. A beetroot, walnut and radicchio salad I had one lunch time was fresh, healthy and delicious. The kitchen kindly added extra greens(spinach and cucumber) when I was one of those annoying customers who asked to change the dish and requested extra veggies when ordering. Staff on the floor, behind the coffee machines and the kitchen are all friendly and accommodating, making this one of my new favourite places to sit and work for a little while with lunch and a coffee.
