I’m sorry for being so stingy, I’m just incredibly picky about my cupcakes — especially my red velvet cupcakes. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a decent shop that sells well-made red velvet cupcakes and when I made a visit to this branch of The Cupcake Bakery, it was no exception. The rich cocoa-buttery taste that red velvet is supposed to have was slightly there, but overpowered by too much heavy chocolate. The frosting would have been much better if it was the classic cream cheese frosting traditionally used for red velvet rather than the overloaded sweetness they had. And the worst bit? Overpriced. The only real positive part to this place is the fact that they have great service. The woman who attended to me was very kind and welcoming so I feel bad giving a low review. But red velvet cupcakes are serious business.

I love this store because it makes you look good. Real good. If you buy someone a box of these things they lose their brains. They open it up and see twelve pretty things that they can eat and suddenly you’re the greatest person on earth. It helps that the presentation of these little lovely beasts is really nice. If you get a nice box and you wrap a ribbon and nice card to it, you look like everyone’s best friend. I actually bought a box for one of my own best friends and it made me realise, that everyone loves well-made food. Particularly sweet ones. No one ever buys themselves these things so when they receive them it’s a smörgåsbord of treats and sugar beauty. The staff were lovely and very helpful. There’s something marvellous about that. Sweet treats, happy staff, happy friends, happy customers.

Ever since Carrie Bradshaw sank her teeth in to a gorgeous pink cupcake while sitting on a park bench in Central Park, girls world over decided that cupcakes were the new black. The kids from the Cupcake Bakery figured this out and got in on the action, opening up several stores Melbourne-wide. If you have had a rough day at work, your partner is being a bit rude, or you just feel like spoiling yourself then you should forget that bottle of wine at home in the fridge and instead get yourself a cupcake. My personal favourite is the red velvet(egh, so amazing) but you really can’t go wrong with any of the flavours. From the simple chocolate to the more decadent rocky road, there is something to please every palate. The Cupcake Bakery also dish up some extra large cupcakes if you are looking to spoil someone on their birthday, and they can even cater for any event you are planning. It can get a little pricey — you’re looking at around $ 4 for a basic cupcake — but honestly, it is so worth it. What makes a party great? Cupcakes, of course. And what will cheer up even the most dreariest of afternoons? Yep, you guessed it, a cupcake. Get on it.

I don’t think there is anything NOT to love about cupcakes– tiny, delicious, pretty… they are one of my enduring obsessions. But I generally don’t buy cupcakes when out and about because more often than not they are a little stale, or the icing doesn’t taste entirely homemade. The Cupcake Bakery is definitely an exception however– the cakes taste absolutely beautiful and fresh and the icing is the sweet without being too cloying and not too dense. I tried the vanilla buttercake with chocolate buttercake icing– so yummy. The store is cute and whimsical as cupcake stores should be and you can order milkshakes, sundaes and coffee too if you desire. Everything is packaged really sweetly and they do corporate events and catering too.
