A little pricey but it’s a decent environment if you just want to chill for an evening

I really enjoy this place. Food and service always great and tonight no exception. Both of us ordered the 300gm steak served with salad & chips and even though the menu said it would be served with mash & spinach, we didn’t mind. Main also came with a comp glass of vino. We both wanted baked cheesecake for dessert but sadly the kitchen was out so we had to settled for a chocolate moose/ice cream dish which was lovely.

Classy establishment, S&R has a nice warmth to it, something that may come from the super-friendly service that seems embedded in its culture. Grab a beer from the great selection of taps downstairs, or head upstairs for a nice pub meal. Me and some friends used to come every second Tuesday for the cheap steak-and-drink deal but I have to say that we stopped because the cuts were becoming increasingly fattier and gristlier — seems they might have started to skimp on the quality. Still when it was good, it was very good indeed and a great deal. Sometimes after work it can feel a little too«suity» — but that might just be because half the crowd seemed to be from my work when I pop in for a few wind-down drinks. Can also occasionally get pretty busy before a big Etihad game, but that rule applies for all venues at this end of town. My go to spot for a boozy work lunch.(Sometimes we skip the«lunch» bit if I’m being perfectly honest)

Great casual environment. Bar down stairs and a waited dining area upstairs. The service is great and welcoming. Food is awesome, particularly the salt and pepper squid as a starter. Food is also cheaper than a lot of other places around.

I used to find people who drank here insufferable but lately it has been feeling more genuine. When I mentioned this to a friend he pointed out that maybe it was me that had changed. Maybe. They had good beer on tap, a mix of Australian craft and European classics like Staropramen. I drank a Tooborac Maple Cream Ale which I quite liked and a Nail Ale.

Another English style«pub» with huge leather couches, stools and the mock Tudor feel. They have your usual range of beers and ciders on tap and a half decent wine list. I haven’t eaten here as there was nothing on the menu that suited my vegan choice and I didn’t ask if they could help out as we were in a bit of a rush. Can get stupidly busy if there is a match of some description on at Etihad Stadium and with only 2 bar staff the wait can be a little too long. Not cheap but nor pricey — has outdoor tables for those hot nights we do sometimes get and heaters when it gets a tad cold. It’s sort of a «local» as it’s handy to work not as slow as «Slate» and not as up market as «Mr Mason» but not the sort of venue I’d rave about.

Yes, it’s down in the arse end of town, but Saint & Rogue actually a really classy pub. It recently had a small fire that shut its doors for a few weeks, but Allen and the team are back at work keeping office workers, football goers and commuters fed and watered. The rich wooden interior, live jazz and awesome steak sandwiches are an unexpected delight this close to King Street. In fact, I think it could be the only venue without pokies or boobs for a 2 km radius. It gets crazy busy from 5 – 8 on a Friday, rivaled only by The Miter for suits swilling, sardine-style. Most other times it’s easy enough to get either a lounge chair by the window or a booth upstairs. If you sit at the bar during the day chances are you’ll meet Allen, who is often propped up doing his books. He’s possibly the world’s friendliest publican and is fond of giving out free drinks(to us ladies, anyway). Once he even gave me his brand new umbrella to keep because he didn’t want my hair to get messed up in the rain. What a charmer! Next time you’ve got a few minutes to kill before catching a train from Southern Cross, pop in and see what he gives you…
